Job Description Summary:
Under the direction of the Director – Public Service and Exemptions and the direct supervision of the department Lead, the Public Service Specialist I responds to customer inquiries and is responsible for accepting and processing homestead and portability applications.
Education / Experience Requirements
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma.
Prior clerical and/or customer service experience in an office environment is preferred. This is an entry-level position.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Job Duties and Essential Functions

- Provide counter and telephone service to members of the public through courteous interaction and knowledgeable assistance of the homestead application process, as well as basic inquiries to the office
- Verify and process most homestead and portability applications through manual data entry to computer-based property records, as well as the on-line homestead exemption application filing system
- Research information using computer-based data and respond to public inquiries in person, by telephone, fax and/or by mail and email correspondence
- Provide switchboard relief as assigned
- Scan and file departmental documents in an accurate manner as required
- Perform other related work as assigned
Knowledge / Abilities / Skills
Public Service Specialist I is expected to acquire knowledge and demonstrate skills reflected below within first six months of employment.
- Basic knowledge of state requirements, laws, county ordinances, rules and regulations related to the Property Appraiser’s Office
- Ability to perform accurate data entry to property records
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand basic legal documents
- Skilled in the use of computer, spreadsheet and word processing software
- Effectively and efficiently operate office switchboard
- Ability to sit at a desk, view a display screen and perform data entry for extended periods of time
- Ability to stand at a counter to assist the public for extended periods of time
