Position Overview:

The assistant dean of nursing is a full-time, 12-month, non-tenure administrative faculty position within the College of Health Professions, Nursing, and Pharmacy (HPNP). Reporting to the dean, the assistant dean provides leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for the Department of Nursing’s academic programs. The position prioritizes administrative responsibilities, including faculty management, accreditation oversight, curriculum development, and operational planning, while also maintaining a presence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Essential Job Functions:

These consist of four domains: Administration, Teaching, Scholarship, and Service.

Administration (75%)

  • Lead and manage the Department of Nursing, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team.
  • Oversee faculty recruitment, development, mentoring, and annual evaluations, ensuring alignment with institutional goals.
  • Supervise day-to-day departmental operations, including faculty workload assignments, budget oversight, and strategic planning.
  • In collaboration with college and university assessment and accreditation personnel, ensure compliance with accreditation requirements (e.g., CCNE) and Board of Nursing standards, including report submissions and site visit coordination.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Admissions to support student recruitment efforts for both traditional and accelerated BSN programs and empower Nursing faculty to engage regularly in such recruitment efforts.
  • Review and address student grievances, developing appropriate remediation plans in collaboration with faculty.
  • Maintain and update departmental policies, including the student handbook, in collaboration with faculty and Student Life personnel.
  • Represent the department in university-wide committees and initiatives, serving as a key advocate for nursing education.
  • Develop and maintain external partnerships with healthcare institutions for practice, education, and research collaborations.
  • Drive innovation in program development by exploring and implementing new degree offerings or other forward-looking academic initiatives that enhance the department’s growth and impact.
  • Oversee scheduling of nursing courses, labs, and exams in coordination with college and university personnel.
  • Lead departmental strategic planning to advance educational, research, and clinical practice initiatives.
  • Assign and maintain a list of faculty academic advisors to the students in both the traditional and accelerated programs.
  • Oversee curriculum development implementation and quality improvement initiatives.

Teaching (10% or 3-4 load hours/academic year)

  • Provide high-quality instruction in didactic and/or clinical courses as assigned.
  • Develop and refine nursing curriculum, incorporating innovative teaching strategies to enhance student learning.
  • Serve as an exemplary professional role model for nursing students and faculty.
  • Collaborate with other members of the faculty to develop the curriculum, and teaching and evaluation methods needed for effective delivery of that curriculum. This includes creating, developing, and evaluating innovative teaching methods which prepare students for modern nursing practice.
  • Assess student learning in all classes and implement changes to demonstrate continuous improvement.
  • Meet assigned classes, beginning and ending class sessions as scheduled.
  • Maintain compliance with the academic calendar, and with policies and procedures in the Faculty Manual.

Scholarship (5%)

  • Engage in scholarly activities that contribute to nursing education, research, and practice.
  • Disseminate research findings through presentations, publications, and academic collaborations.
  • Mentor faculty and students in scholarly endeavors.

Service (10%)

  • Serve as an active member of the college’s leadership team and university committees.
  • Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for faculty and staff.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community service activities that advance the field of nursing.
  • Participate in community service activities as appropriate for the faculty’s area of practice, or as determined by the college or University.
  • Participate in faculty governance, including attending meetings—full faculty, college, department, and committee—and fulfilling attendant responsibilities.

Secondary Job Functions

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or DNP) in Nursing and an active or eligible Registered Nurse (RN) license in Indiana.
  • Credentials supporting appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Minimum of six years of academic nursing experience at the baccalaureate level, with prior leadership experience in academic or practice environments.
  • Strong background in faculty and program management, accreditation processes, and curriculum development.
  • Experience in budget oversight and strategic planning preferred.
  • Commitment to interprofessional education and collaboration in health sciences.
  • Demonstrated excellence in communication, leadership, and professional networking.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time, exempt position requiring flexibility for occasional evenings and weekends.
