GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
A submitted agency application will be used as a basis for a background investigation that will determine an applicant’s qualifications for a position with the Mar-Mac Police Department.

**AN AGENCY APPLICATION MUST BE SUBMITTED FOR CONSIDERATION**
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
To be a police officer in the State of Iowa, a person must be certified by the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (ILEA). The Iowa legislators have given ILEA authority “to set standards to the law enforcement service” in the State of Iowa. If a person cannot or will not meet these standards, they cannot be certified. Agencies may use stricter criteria than ILEA to select police officer candidates. A detailed explanation for the minimum standards for Iowa Law Enforcement Officers can be found in the Code of Iowa, Chapter 80B, Chapter 400, and the ILEA Administrative Rules. The following are the standards to be a Mar-Mac Police Officer.
All applicants must:
- Be able to perform and complete the essential functions and duties expected of a police officer with or without reasonable accommodations.
- Be a U. S. Citizen and a resident of Iowa or intend to become a resident upon being employed.
- Have the ability to obtain certification from ILEA.
- Have reach the age of 21 at the time of appointment.
- Possess at least an associate degree or a have a minimum of 60 college credits.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Possess a high level of personal integrity and be of good moral character as determined by a thorough background investigation including a fingerprint search conducted of local, state and national fingerprint files.
- Have not been convicted of a felony or a crime involving moral turpitude.
- Not be addicted to drugs or alcohol.
- Be examined by a physician and meet the physical requirements necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of a law enforcement officer.
- Have uncorrected vision of not less than 20/100 in both eyes, corrected to 20/20, and color vision consistent with the occupational demands of law enforcement.
- Have normal hearing in each ear (hearing aids are acceptable if a candidate can demonstrate sufficient hearing proficiency to perform all necessary duties of a law enforcement officer).
- Undergo psychological testing.
- Not be opposed to use of force to fulfill duties.
Additional requirements for non-certified applicants:
- Successfully pass the physical fitness tests.
- Successfully pass the Police Officer Selection Test (POST) testing.
