- Two years of customer service experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
- Associate’s degree or higher in Library Science, English, Liberal Arts, or a related field
- Experience with library-related automation systems, such as Polaris ILS
- Experience with information retrieval from library-related databases
- Experience working or volunteering in a public library
- Experience assisting customers with online account payments and account management
- Bilingual skills in Spanish and English
- Issues, verifies, and renews library cards to customers
- Informs customers of their account status and answers questions as needed
- Answers basic reference questions and directional questions from customers
- Resolves customer concerns by phone, in person, or by e-mail/online
- Refers customer concerns to the appropriate staff member or supervisor as necessary
- Assists customers with the use of a self-service payment kiosk
- Processes library materials for shelving and routing
- Performs light cleaning duties, such as dusting, straightening, and bathroom tidying
- Performs opening or closing duties as assigned
- Assists with maintenance and display of the collection
- Initiates search for materials claimed “returned”
- Library environment requiring evening and weekend availability
- Ability to cover shifts at nearby library branches
- Ability to lift up to 20 pounds floor-to-waist; lift up to 5 pounds waist-to-shoulder, lift 1 pound shoulder-to-overhead, carry up to 10 pounds a distance of up to 50 feet, and push/pull up to 50 pounds a distance of 100 feet
