Job Summary:
The Nurse Technician is able to practice only under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Under Wisconsin Code direct supervision means immediate availability to continually coordinate, direct and inspect at first hand the practice of another.
Performs routine medication pass and related tasks necessary to maintain the medication pass system according to the nursing policies an procedures, facility standards and residents’ rights.
The Board of Nursing requires that the Supervising RN/LPN be in the same facility.
Duties and Responsibilities
Those tasks delegated within the scope of practice of professional nursing, however, the functions of assessment and evaluation may not be delegated. The Nurse Technician may assist the RN/LPN in these functions, but not perform them in their entirety without the RN/LPN Supervisor.
- The Nurse Technician must be able to demonstrate educational preparation and abilities to complete all delegated tasks.
- The Nurse Technician must look to the RN/LPN for direction and assistance.
- The RN/LPN must observe, monitor and evaluate the acts performed by the Nurse Technician.
- Obtain pertinent resident information by listening to report at the beginning of shift.
- Organize med cart making sure to stock all supplies and liquids to prepare for med pass.
- Perform blood glucose testing as ordered by physician.
- Follow policy-pass oral routine medications at the times assigned being careful to check medication punch pack with the M.A.R. before administering. Particular attention is to be paid to drug name, dosage, route, and time to be given. Review possible side effects.
- Initial all medications given immediately after administering to resident being sure to again compare punch pack with EMAR.
- If any questions arise, they shall be directed to the RN/LPN as the first resource to solve such questions.
- Follow good infection control, universal precautions procedures, especially through hand washing when indicated.
- Report any observable medication side effects or problem situations to Charge Nurse and document in Med Tech Observation Record.
- Assist in patient teaching as delegated.
- Demonstrate knowledge of Residents’ Rights. Help the residents to exercise and/or protect their rights.
- Become knowledgeable of residents’ choices and follow those choices accordingly.
- Report residents’ complaints promptly, following Resident Rights and Abuse Prevention Policies.
- Maintain confidentiality of resident information.
- Take and record vital signs as assigned. Report those that are outside of the normal parameters, report fever over 99.1° F., pulse <60 or >100, BP <50/90 or >180/94, respirations <16 or >28.
- Be knowledgeable of Markesan Resident Home’s Safety Rules & Regulations. Know and implement all safety rules.
- Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Report equipment needs or repairs.
- Clean equipment and utility areas as assigned.
- Report any incidents or accidents to the Charge Nurse promptly.
- Assist in resident evacuation during fire & adverse weather drills/emergencies.
- Maintain a positive, helpful attitude toward residents, their families, staff, volunteers, and visitors.
- Maintain a consistent attendance to ensure proper resident care.
- Participate in required orientation and in-service programs. Attend staff meetings as requested.
- Perform other duties as assigned and consistent with level of preparation and experience.
- All other duties as required by the Director of Nursing Services.
- Do not administer controlled PRN medications; RN will administer.
- Follow Medication Administration Policy (Attached).
Qualifications
- The Nurse Technician shall be a nursing student who either is currently in a nursing program or who has been unsuccessful on the nursing licensure exam and is retaking the exam, and has successfully completed medication pass skills and pharmacology, and includes the signature of an instructor of an accredited school of nursing.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand the English language
- Ability to relate positively, effectively, and appropriately with residents, families community members, volunteers, and other facility staff.
- Possess special interest in and a positive attitude about working with long-term care residents and the elderly.
- Free of communicable disease.
- Successful competency completion.
