What are the responsibilities and job description for the Traffic Signal Technician position at Martin County Board of County Commissioners?

Repair and maintain traffic signals and streetlights in Martin County.  Locates and marks those underground facilities that are maintained by the Martin County Traffic Division.  Supervises and inspects the work of contractors engaged in signal installation.

This position may require you to have a take-home vehicle for purposes of responding to departmental emergency situations. An employee is covered under the County’s auto insurance policy when operating the vehicle in the scope of his or her employment. Employees are encouraged to purchase a rider of endorsement to their personal automobile policy to provide coverage for operating a County vehicle for personal use including driving to and from work.

Programming of traffic signal control equipment, replacement of bulbs / LED's in traffic signals, and placement of signal heads.
 
Programs, installs, repairs, and maintains vehicle/pedestrian detectors, switches, relays, flashers, conduit, signal wire, microprocessor based controllers, wiring, support poles, and fiber optics.
 
Cleaning and maintaining controller cabinets.
 
Calculates lead times on equipment repairs and request materials, supplies or manpower as required and maintains proper records and logs of repair/maintenance activities.
 
Trouble-shooting traffic signal controllers.
 
Supervising contractors during the installation of traffic signals.
 
Trouble-shooting and repairing street light circuits.
 
Performs emergency and routine field servicing of complex traffic signal equipment often operating or working from an aerial bucket truck.
 
Perform 24 / 7 on-call emergency response on a rotational basis.
 
Ensures compliance with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
 
Performing work related to this job description as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Operational knowledge of electronic devices, together with diagnosis, maintenance, and repair of such devices. 
 

Operational knowledge of computerized traffic signal equipment, preferably Econolite® brand, and controllers.


Operational knowledge of local area networking (LAN), Ethernet, and Fiber Optic communications.
 
Knowledge of and proficiency with computers.
 
Skills in record-keeping.
 
Ability to operate and work from an aerial lift and/or bucket truck.
 
Ability to perform manual labor.
 
Ability to communicate effectively.
 
Ability to supervise personnel for all related duties.
 
Ability to understand oral and written instructions, maintain good working relationships, and exercise initiative and sound judgment in making decisions.

Must possess a High School Diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma and three (3) years' experience in installation, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic components necessary to operate traffic control devices.

Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 

Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License

International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) Signal Level 1 or ability to obtain within ninety (90) days of date of hire.

Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Safety certification or ability to obtain within ninety (90) days of date of hire.

Very frequent driving (vehicle/equip/other). 

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed primarily outdoors. 

Involves frequent interaction with people.

Occasionally inside, cold, dusty, working around vibrations, exposed to mechanical hazards, exposed to chemicals, working on slippery surfaces. 

Frequently dry, wet, dirty, working with adequate lighting, moving objects/machinery, exposed to electrical hazards and insects, working on irregular surfaces. 

Very frequently odorous (including gases/fumes), noisy, working with adequate ventilation, working from high places, around radiant energy. 

Constantly outside, hot, humid. 

This position is included in the County’s Hearing Conservation Program due to routine exposure to high noise levels. Employees in this role are expected to wear hearing protection and participate in periodic hearing evaluations, in alignment with best practice guidelines based on OSHA recommendations.
