The Deputy Sheriff, under the direct supervision of the Sergeant, performs generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property, and the execution of orders issued through the jurisdiction of the Sheriff of Martin County. This class works under general supervision and requires considerable judgment, initiative, and skill in a variety of situations.

Responsibilities require consistent attention and commitment to the agency's mission. All assigned duties and tasks are expected to be performed in an effective, efficient and safe manner. The jobholder must accept the responsibility to support and promote the organization's mission and comply with its directives. Personal conduct and behavior (on duty as well as off duty) must be such that it does not bring disrepute or unnecessarily endanger the public's trust or confidence in the agency or its members.

The Deputy Sheriff is a sworn officer and as with all sworn personnel, has the power of arrest and is capable of performing the tasks associated with sworn status.

Essential Functions

Promote public safety in patrol area.

Respond to all dispatch calls in a timely manner.

Investigate illegal or suspicious activities.

Respond to a variety of calls that require several intervention approaches ranging from personal counseling techniques to the use of physical or deadly force.

Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, to assist accident victims, and to investigate causes.

Observe traffic and initiate traffic stops

Perform checks on dwellings, buildings and grounds to ensure prevention of damage by fire, theft and/or vandalism.

Respond to calls for assistance, administer first aid at crime or accident scenes; also securing these scenes to make sure the integrity of the scene and evidence are not compromised.

Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders.

Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.

Apprehend and arrest suspects without violating suspect's rights or causing undue harm while observing officer safety procedures at all times.

Record daily activities and submit logs.

Prepare other related reports and paperwork disbursed to appropriate authorities.

Transport or escort prisoners and defendants en route to courtrooms, prisons or jails, attorney's offices or medical facilities.

Testify in court concerning work activities.

Place people in protective custody.

Assist in the presentation of departmental training programs.

Additional Duties

Perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Education and Training

Graduation from High school or an equivalent program.

Minimum Qualifications And Standards Required

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.

Certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission.

Physical Demands

Frequent stooping and bending required, as well as manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and the ability to grasp objects. Position requires color perception. Requires the ability to see, hear, and speak. Incumbent must be able to defend themselves, defend others, or otherwise gain control of a physically resistant individuals. Requires the ability to walk for extended periods of time.

Work Environment

The Deputy Sheriff position is expected to work varied, twelve-hour shifts, many of which include nighttime and weekend work. Work is performed in a controlled and occasionally high-stress environment.

During natural disasters, major accident scenes, or major crime scenes, the jobholder may be required to be on scene to assist in any way with both Sheriff's Office personnel and victims. The type and amount of assistance will be at the discretion of the officer in charge at the scene.

Removal

Removal can be with or without fault of the jobholder or the agency. Appointment is at the will of the Sheriff. Economic conditions that cause reductions in work force, the member's inability to attend regularly to work, chronic illness, and a failure to perform competently on any of the critical tasks of the position or a consistent failure to perform competently on regular tasks are among the major reasons for job removal without fault. Failure to support the agency's mission, uphold the oath of office, behave in a manner that supports the Sheriff's Office Code of Conduct, continually comply with preconditions of original employment, or to display due regard for the civil liberties of any persons, will lead to removal with or without fault. In addition, accruing atypical amounts of dysfunctional work time or requiring atypical amounts of supervisory counseling or remedial training will lead to removal with or without fault. (Pursuant to section IX of the Rules and Regulations).
