- Installation and Repair of Piping Systems:
- Install, maintain, and repair high- and low-pressure steam, gas, air, and water lines.
- Work with heating, ventilation, and boiler systems within institutional buildings.
- Fabricate and assemble pipe components using welding, threading, or grooving techniques.
- Maintenance of Heating Systems:
- Inspect and service steam heating systems, radiators, heat exchangers, and related valves and pumps.
- Monitor and adjust steam pressure to meet operational standards.
- System Testing and Diagnostics:
- Conduct pressure tests to identify leaks or inefficiencies.
- Use gauges, sensors, and diagnostic tools to troubleshoot problems in steam or hydronic systems.
- Work in Secure Environments:
- Perform duties in areas with inmate presence, following security protocols.
- Work in coordination with custody staff to ensure safety during tool use and movement between areas.
- Documentation and Compliance:
- Maintain accurate records of repairs, inspections, and preventative maintenance.
- Ensure all work meets state and local plumbing codes as well as internal correctional facility regulations.
- Preventative Maintenance:
- Participate in routine inspection schedules for piping and mechanical systems throughout the facility.
- Proactively replace worn components to reduce emergency repairs.
- Collaboration:
- Coordinate with facility maintenance supervisors, engineers, and other trades (e.g., HVAC, electricians) on multidisciplinary projects.
- May train or oversee inmate workers assigned to assist with tasks, following DOC rules.
- Emergency Response:
- Respond to steam or piping-related emergencies, including leaks, blockages, or equipment failure that could impact security or operations.
- Tool and Material Management:
- Maintain inventory of fittings, pipes, tools, and safety gear.
- Secure tools and equipment in compliance with facility safety regulations.
- Safety Practices:
- Follow OSHA guidelines and facility-specific safety protocols, including lockout/tagout and confined space procedures.
