Job Overview
The Maintenance Specialist I will provide maintenance support services as part of the Devens Department of Public Works (DPW) & Recreation. They oversee Devens’ facilities and grounds. Responsibilities include performing all basic maintenance tasks required, either as a primary or secondary member of the team, including, but not limited to working within the building trades; landscaping; road and sidewalk maintenance; tree work; trash and recycling; and event support. Tasks also include operating heavy equipment, performing basic vehicle and equipment operational checks, maintenance, and repairs, completing work orders, responding to, and providing immediate assistance for emergency systems (building failures, storm impacts, road conditions, etc.), and performing other duties as assigned by management. In addition to overtime pay, stipends are also available, as applicable.
Responsibilities
- Perform all basic maintenance tasks required (carpentry, plumbing, electrical, painting, HVAC etc.) to maintain facilities, roads, grounds, utilities, and buildings in operational status.
- Respond and provide immediate assistance for emergency system failures (water leak, power outage, heat, road conditions, etc.) by repairing/minimizing damage/threat to property/personnel safety until problem is repaired/resolved.
- Operate a wide variety of miscellaneous equipment (chainsaws, tampers, augers, snow blowers, etc.).
- Operate a wide variety of commercial vehicles (utility, dump, rack body trucks, etc.).
- Operate heavy equipment (front-end loaders, backhoes) for utility, roads, and grounds maintenance (snow removal, pothole repair, clean-up operations, etc.).
- Perform basic vehicle and equipment operational checks, maintenance, and repairs.
Competencies
- Understanding of workplace concepts and issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-oppression.
- 5-plus years proven experience in facilities, roads, grounds, utilities, building maintenance or any combination thereof, with specific experience/certification
- A Massachusetts electrical license
- Basic computer knowledge and skills to use various operating software.
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license, Class B with air brake endorsement
- Hoisting Engineer Class 1C, 2B license required, or the ability to obtain within 90 days.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Ability to prioritize work and perform multiple tasks simultaneously while adhering to deadlines.
