Garden Educator

We are seeking an experienced educator with a strong background in science and a passion for nature and horticulture to join our team at the Elm Bank Garden. As an educator, you will be responsible for developing and implementing both in-school and informal horticultural programs, as well as teaching formal, informal, and summer school groups. The successful applicant should have either prior school teaching experience or experience as an educator in a museum, nature center, Garden or similar organization. They will be comfortable working with a wide range of age groups.

Key Responsibilities:

• Develop and implement horticultural programs that cater to the needs of different audiences, including school groups, community groups, and individuals
• Teach formal, informal, and summer school groups about horticulture and the natural world, and lead educational tours of the botanic garden
• Create educational materials and resources that are age-appropriate and engaging, and ensure that they align with relevant curriculum standards
• Collaborate with other garden and external staff to develop interdisciplinary programs that connect horticulture with other subjects, such as art, literature, and history
• Develop extensive relationships with schools and other community organizations to promote the botanic garden's educational programs and resources
• Keep up-to-date with developments in the field of horticulture and education, and incorporate new ideas and approaches into the botanic garden's programs
• Perform administrative tasks related to all education programs, such as scheduling, record-keeping, and reporting
• Undertake careful evaluation of programming to ensure constant development and audience responsiveness

Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in education, biology, horticulture or a related field preferred
• Prior experience teaching in a formal school setting or as an educator in an informal institutional setting
• Strong knowledge of plant biology and horticulture, as well as experience working with plants in a garden setting
• Passion for nature and a personal interest in horticulture
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with people of all ages and backgrounds
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities
• Comfortable working independently and as part of a team

This position is available as a full-time position, Tuesday-Saturday with occasional weekend work. At least 30% of this position occurs outdoors.

Salary : $48,000 - $64,000
