Job Description
SAFETY ENGINEER, MIT.nano, to manage safety systems and programs within MIT.nano, a state-of-the-art laboratory complex serving a large research and development community. Will work closely with technical staff and central MIT EHS to identify hazards, design systems, develop procedures and incorporate solutions to mitigate injuries, property damage, and maintain operations.
Job Requirements
REQUIRED: B.S. in chemistry, chemical engineering, or a safety-related discipline; four years’ related experience working in a laboratory environment; experience identifying workplace and research hazards, conducting hazard assessments, managing projects, and participating in engineering solutions, particularly with team approaches; thorough knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., Massachusetts fire prevention regulations and building code, NFPA codes, ANSI standards, OSHA regulations, and Cambridge Municipal Code) and general EHS expertise; experience working with hazardous materials, including wet corrosive chemicals, solvents, and polymers; knowledge of chemical compatibilities and reactivity and safe practices for working with hazardous materials; proficiency with hazard communication and learning/understanding safety information (e.g., safety data sheets, PubChem, etc.); excellent interpersonal and written and oral communication skills; ability to work alone or within a team in a highly research-oriented environment that requires frequent interaction with faculty, students, and research staff; an interest in training the user community and speaking to large groups; and the ability to recognize and respond to unsafe conditions/dangerous situations. PREFERRED: experience working in a semiconductor process facility, cleanroom facility, or other research lab; one-on-one and large group training experience; ability to convey complex ideas to personnel with diverse backgrounds and education experience; and proficiency with document and data management tools (e.g., Microsoft SharePoint sites, Wikis, QuickBase, Dropbox). Work conditions: lifting and transporting weights of up to 50lbs.; exposure to hazardous material; and wearing respiratory protection, including air-purifying respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus.
