General Responsibilities

Massachusetts Maritime Academy seeks applications for an Associate Dean of the School of Engineering, who is an innovative, strategic, and collegial academic leader who understands the mission of our Academy and is committed to student success. Reporting to the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, the Associate Dean will play a central role in enhancing academic excellence and promoting our Engineering programs. The Associate Dean serves as a member of the Provost’s senior leadership team and will work closely with the Provost, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Assistant Dean for Academic Resources, other university leaders, faculty, and staff in formulating the School’s academic goals and policies. The Associate Dean will work closely with the Engineering Department Chairs in supervising the program areas in Marine Engineering, Facilities Engineering and Energy Systems Engineering and its related courses. The Associate Dean has oversight of all personnel evaluation for the Engineering faculty and instructional specialists and supervises the screening and selection process for full-time and part-time faculty and staff. Additionally, the Associate Dean works with industry leaders to develop partnerships contributing to student opportunity. The Associate Dean may also serve as Dean of Undergraduate Studies in times of absence.

General Responsibilities:

  • Work collaboratively with Engineering Department Chairs to regularly review each program, with a sustained focus on curricular development consistent with academic requirements and industry needs.
  • Supervise the conduct of the ABET accreditation process for the Energy Systems Engineering major to verify program quality and ensure practices meet standards for technical education.
  • In coordination with the Registrar’s Office, work with Chairs and faculty to develop course schedules and ensure that faculty loading is consistent with applicable faculty union contracts.
  • Support faculty, ensuring their access to the knowledge, skills and infrastructure to facilitate student learning.
  • Champion the Academy’s Learn-Do-Learn model by supporting students and faculty participating in Coast Guard license track training aboard the Training Ship Kennedy and Commercial Shipping billets and non-license track Experiential Learning programs and industry co-ops.
  • Promote excellence in teaching, research, and service while fostering activities that improve the retention, achievement, and timely graduation of students.
  • Partner with Mariner Credentialing to manage the conduct of Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) associated with Coast Guard licensure.
  • Guide the curricular and faculty transition to welcome the Academy’s National Security Multi-Mission vessel in 2024.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Intercultural Engagement and Admissions to support inclusive excellence on campus, by making engineering programs accessible to a diverse student population
  • Uphold the commitment to shared governance on campus, by working with faculty committees and the All University Committee for continuous improvement of all campus activities.
  • Develop industry partnership to identify student opportunities for co-operative education positions in the traditional and evolving maritime realm.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Hold a terminal degree in Engineering, Educational Administration or Resources, or other related field; Ph.D. preferred. (Those with non-Engineering terminal degrees must have an Engineering Masters or Bachelors degree.)
  • Have a minimum of three years of academic leadership experience.
  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Understand the unique mission of the university as a maritime academy.

Salary

$110,000 to $120,000 based on education, qualifications and experience. The Academy offers generous benefits policies and a competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Academy is not sponsoring immigration visas at this time.
