Summer Camp Counselor
Massaro Community Farm (MCF) seeks full time Summer Camp Counselors for our 2024 Youth Summer Camp Program. Counselors will help develop and lead lessons and activities for our summer camp children ages 5-9. Our summer camp takes place from June 24-August 2, with additional paid Staff Training planned for the week of June 17.
About Massaro Community Farm: Massaro Community Farm (MCF) is a nonprofit certified organic farm in Woodbridge, CT. Our mission is to Keep Farming, Feed People and Build Community. We fulfill this mission by offering the sale of produce to seasonal subscribers, to restaurants, and at farmers markets. MCF offers farm-based education for youth and adults, and holds community building events each year. We donate at least 10% of our harvest to hunger relief agencies, which averages ~6,500 pounds of produce annually.
Our farm and forest provides lots of learning opportunities with activities that include gardening, fort building, nature arts and stream stomping.
Position Summary: MCF has been hosting educational programs for all ages since 2012, including a half-day summer camp program. In 2021, we transitioned to offering a full-day summer camp program. This summer, we will host 25-45 students each week; students are typically divided into groups by age. We are looking for staff who love nature and kids and want to spend their summer active and outside. Counselors will supervise and direct their own camp cohort of 9-12 campers and facilitate various activities, games, and crafts in an entirely outdoor setting. In addition, Counselors will assist in developing camp curriculum alongside the Summer Camp Coordinator. Counselors do not need to be experts in all program areas but must be ready to work outside, be highly responsible and have fun with the campers.
Primary Responsibilities:
- ● Attend Staff Training during the week of June 17, or the ability to make up those hours at a separate time with the Summer Camp Coordinator
- ● Plan, coordinate, and lead outdoor activities and crafts for a group of up to 12 students based on the provided materials
- ● Set up and break down materials and supplies for lessons as well as for the outdoor gardens
- ● Collaborate with other Counselors and the Summer Camp Coordinator to coordinate activities, ensure safety of children, and effectively teach about the outdoors
- ● Oversee assigned Counselor in Training, as neededRequired Qualifications:
- ● At least 18 years of age by the first week of camp
- ● High school diploma or equivalent
- ● Previous direct experience working with children in an instructional program, preferablyin an outdoor setting
- ● Previous experience developing or planning activities, games, or educational curriculumfor children
- ● Ability to work with children between the ages of 5-9 from a variety of socioeconomicand cultural backgrounds
- ● Interest and curiosity in farming, forestry, agroecology, or gardening
- ● Comfortability working around farm animals (rabbits, chickens, pigs, goats)
- ● Comfortability working outside in a variety of weather conditions
- ● Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
- ● Creative problem solving skills and flexibility
- ● Ability to pass a background check
- ● Fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virusPreferred Qualifications:
- ● Current First Aid/CPR certification
- ● Current certification to administer topical and oral medication
Work Details:
- ● This is an hourly position with a pay rate of $17/hour.
- ● Counselors are expected to work Monday-Friday from 8am-4pm from June 24-August 2;it is expected that all Counselors will work approximately forty hours a week duringthose 6 weeks. Staff training will take place during the week of June 17.
