About the Role

The Fleet Maintenance Manager will provide leadership and direction to the shipboard engineering staff supporting his/her assigned ships to assure the vessels are operated to the highest standard and in support of the company objectives. This includes maintaining the highest level of fleet maintenance and repair, adherence to the company safety polices, compliance with regulatory issues, administering cost controls, and supervising all assigned port engineers in support of the fleet’s schedule integrity.

The objective of the position is to ensure that these assets yield the maximum return on investment while effectively achieving company objectives in the field of ocean transportation.

The position is responsible for all voyage maintenance and repair (M&R) of his/her assigned vessels to include main propulsion, auxiliary equipment, hull equipment, deck machinery, safety systems, navigational and communication system, galley and hotel equipment, as well as all other aspects of M&R related to vessels owned or operated by the company. 

This position will prepare all required financial data for presentation to management, covering accurate cost estimates for voyage repairs, operation, and repair projects including a time line for successful completion.  This includes fuel consumption estimates for operating plan budgets and special projects or new business.

The position supervises contracts for all non-shipyard ship modifications and M&R, including negotiation of any changes to contract work specifications, control of budgets, on-site inspections, and preparation of specifications to be used to solicit bids.

This individual is responsible for the supervision of the 3 Long Beach based Port Engineers to assure compliance with the collective bargaining agreement and comp time hour reporting.  This position also provides technical guidance to the Port Engineers and all Chief Engineers on day to day and on emergency repairs.

This position will work closely with the Sr. Director, Vessel Operations & Engineering, Vessel Managers, the Director, Performance Monitoring & Technical Engineering, as well as with the Vice President, Vessel Operations and Engineering to integrate, coordinate, and successfully achieve operational and maintenance objectives.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop and administer maintenance & repair (M&R) budgets for all assigned vehicles that will insure that Matson vessels are maintained to the highest standards to meet or exceed regulatory body requirements for safety and also to ensure Matson customers are served with the most dependable schedule integrity in the industry.
  • Establish and maintain procedures that encourage Chief Engineers to participate in cost effective decision making with the goal to prioritize M&R work without compromising vessel quality or safety.
  • Support the development of dry dock specifications to assure all of the required and regulatory repairs are accomplished during all dry docking availabilities.
  • Provide daily reports to the Sr. Director, Vessel Operations & Engineering on vessel conditions that may impact present and future strategic planning decisions related to fleet deployment and scheduling.
  • Develop new and innovative management tools in the form of reports or procedures that insure M&R decision-making is ultimately controlled by management yet requires accountability and participation from Port Engineers and vessel Chief Engineers.
  • Develop and update the Planned Maintenance routines aboard all vessels to improve overall performance and to minimize machinery downtime.
  • Develop policy and procedure to accomplish maintenance goals while managing the resources of the Port Engineers.
  • Ensure that the Port Engineers properly manages their work time and work load.
  • Review and approve the Kronos time cards of the assigned Port Engineers.
  • Establish and enforce controls to accurately account for and verify Port Engineer comp time.
  • Maintain awareness of current rules, regulations and standards relating to shipboard engineering activities.
  • Recruit, develop, train, and motivate personnel to maintain a competent engineering staff.
  • Establish and enforce procedures for monitoring fleet maintenance activity to assure business like conduct and timely completion of assigned tasks.
  • Track and report on monthly variances to the Annual Plan.
  • Maintain fluent working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements pertaining to employees within the department and aboard the ships.
  • Enforce proper procedural practices in maintaining accuracy of the NS5 management system for vessel machinery, spare parts, planned maintenance, and machinery history/repair documentation.
  • Establish and enforce sound fuel conservation practices aboard the company vessels in order to insure cost effective fuel consumption while maintaining vessel speeds which will support the fleet schedule cargo commitments.
  • Facilitate and create Capital Expense Requests as required for modifications and upgrades that are to be made while vessels are in service.
  • Respond to all engineering NCR’s for his/her assigned vessels.
  • Complete Annual NS5 Performance Reviews for all assigned Chief Engineers and Port Engineers.
  • Participate on the Matson Safety Committee and on the Engine Officer Selection Committee.

You have these skills:

  • Design experience in marine engineering systems including electrical and automation.
  • AutoCAD drafting skills.
  • Good presentation and teaching skills before large groups.
  • Strong oral and written abilities. The incumbent communicates effectively with design consultants, representatives of the regulatory and classification bodies, ship crews, and company personnel. Proven administration and management capabilities are required including the willingness and capability to train vessel personnel.
  • Advanced Excel, Word, Outlook, NS-5, Microsoft Project.

And these qualifications:

  • State or Federal maritime academy graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marine Engineering preferred.
  • Post Graduate studies in Business, Finance, and Accounting preferred.
  • Licensed US Coast Guard engine license, Steam & Diesel with sailing experience under this license. First Assistant or Chief Engineer license preferred.
  • Professional trained marine engineer from either a State or Federal Maritime Academy, or from a reputable trade school.
  • Licensed engineer employment history should include a broad base of ship repair, new construction, and steam and diesel propulsion and electrical/automation experience.
  • Specific knowledge, training and experience in:
    • all aspects of marine maintenance and repair;
    • understanding of planned maintenance routines;
    • operation of slow and medium speed diesel engines;
    • operation of diesel power plant auxiliaries;
    • operation of high-pressure boilers, steam turbines, steam plant auxiliaries; and
    • operation of reefer, diesel load management systems, electrical and automated systems.
  • The incumbent must be familiar with budget management and control.
  • Containership experience, preferable on Matson liner vessels.
  • Travel as required.
  • May be required to commit to long hours of work when necessary to reach goals and/or deadlines, including work on the weekends and holidays to meet deadlines.
