What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tour Guide/Driver position at Maui Sunriders Bike Co.?

Bike Guide/Driver
Maui Sunriders - Bike Tour Guide / Driver

We take pride in being one of Maui's longest-running downhill bike tour companies, operating for 23 years. Our experience makes us a top choice for self-guided rides down the volcano. Many of our riders have told us that we were the highlight of their Maui trip, appreciating the top-notch service we provide. This dedication has earned us thousands of positive reviews across platforms like Tripadvisor, Yelp, Google, and Facebook. What sets us apart from other downhill bike operators is our three full-service bike shops located in Paia, Kihei, and soon on the Westside, replacing our flagship store lost in Lahaina. Our extensive bike rental fleet includes high-end full-suspension mountain bikes, road bikes, e-bikes, and beach cruisers, providing the widest range of bikes for sale and rentals on the island.

We're looking for a tour guide driver who is knowledgeable about bikes and enjoys interacting with customers. We're searching for someone experienced, knowledgeable, hardworking, detail-oriented, with a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and high standards for excellence. Someone who loves to talk to our guests and share your knowledge about Maui. Alongside driving, your role would involve maintaining our vehicle fleet. Experience is preferred but not required. This includes ensuring all vehicle safety DOT registrations and vehicle registrations are up to date, scheduling routine maintenance, checking and reviewing for repairs needed and ensuring daily maintenance of the vehicles inside and out by our team.

At Maui Sunriders, we're outdoor enthusiasts—cyclists, surfers, skiers, and snowboarders—who live for adventure. Together, our team boasts decades of experience in domestic and international tour guiding, business management, bicycle service and rentals, and various outdoor sports. Many of us hold advanced certifications, and we're committed to surpassing industry standards in safety and service. We're a tight-knit group that works hard and plays hard. Off-duty, you'll find us biking, hiking, or catching waves. We're passionate about bikes and take pride in delivering excellent customer service. Our mission is to ensure our local community enjoys an exceptional experience every time, as we work towards building a vibrant cycling community here on Maui.

Who are we looking for?
Do you consider yourself a ‘people person’? Do you love to talk-story and share your knowledge about Maui? Do you like outdoor adventure sports? Are you a safe driver with a clean driving record? We’re looking for a hard working, detail oriented individual with a positive attitude and open mind to join our team of drivers in a part-time/on call position. If you think you would be an awesome fit but don’t meet all the requirements, that’s ok. If you have the right attitude and are willing to learn, we’d still be excited to talk and try to find something that works!

Job Overview:
Our tour driver shifts begin at 8am and starts with loading bikes onto the van. After greeting guests and outfitting them (helmet, backpack, etc), drivers provide a bike safety briefing. Our guides then narrate a 45 minute drive up Haleakala to the tour staging area. The narrated tour shares the culture and history of Maui, Makawao, Kula and Haleakala as well as bike handling/safety tips. After arriving at the staging area at 6,500’, just outside Haleakala National Park, drivers unload bikes and assist guests as they prepare to ride. After seeing all guests off, the driver remains available to provide roadside assistance and to make sure guests are biking safely down the mountain. The riders regroup just before the community of Kula and you will reload the vans along with a sweep driver assistant. (some shifts you will also be required to be a sweep sag van) At this point we skip over the hwy section that the County has prohibited all tour operators from allowing downhill tours on. At the second staging area, you will re-load bikers and set them on their self-guided journey through Makawao down to Paia. Drivers then meet back at our shop to greet incoming guests as they finish the ride, and to facilitate the cleaning and putting away of gear to ensure it’s ready for the following morning. Drivers are usually done with their shift between 1:30-2:00pm.
