What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Teacher (SPED) position at MBS - Milestones Behavioral Services?
- Develop proposed goals and objectives and Written Service Plans that are appropriate to students’ needs
- IEP implementation should occur in a timely manner (e.g., within 1 week)
- Introduce and implement skill acquisition programs in coordination with LIA, ABA, SABA, or BA
- Review graphs on an ongoing basis to ensure student progress
- Answers GQF’s in a timely manner
- In classroom rotation half time with other time used for problem solving, staff training (approximately 15 hours per week)
- Lead input into program and planning and development
- Help insure that objectives are sequentially prepared – long and short range
- Adapt curriculum relevant to students’ needs utilizing school resources
- Seek input from supervisors
- Weekly clinics with LIA, SABA, ABA, or BA
Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs and FBA’s) – where appropriate decisions/participation occurs through the PPT process:
- Serves as a resource for the clinical team in the development of BIPs
- Implement BIPs as developed by the team
- Ensure staff are implementing BIPs correctly and consistently
Parent/District Communication:
- Answers child specific questions daily and share information with the team
- Notifies parent (and district if necessary) of student injury or illness
- Schedules progress report reviews, observations, and any other parent visits
- Responds to all parent/district communication within a timely manner (e.g., returns phone calls, responds to e-mails)
- Foster positive staff-parent relations and good home-school communication
Classroom Communication
- Communicates changes in programs
- Foster positive staff-staff relationships
- Provides on-going support and training to staff regarding student programming and procedures
- Schedules, organizes, makes agenda for classroom meeting
- Makes sure all staff receive a copy of the meeting notes
Classroom Management
- Schedules staff rotation of students
- Communicates the classrooms job and makes sure it is completed daily
- Assists the classroom staff with classroom clean up daily (possibly job chart with different jobs assigned to staff)
- Provide feedback to staff regarding strengths and/or concerns on an ongoing basis
- Monitor attendance and timeliness of classroom’s Instructional Assistants and Senior Instructional Assistants
- Staff Evaluations
- Maintain professionalism with staff and students
Student Assessment – done through planning and placement team recommendations when appropriate
- Writes progress reports
- Writes proposed goals and objectives
- Ongoing-evaluation and assessment of student programming
- Leads/conducts evaluations for annual reviews
- CMT Skills Checklists/CT Alternate Assessment
- File all documents in the student files
Physical Requirements
Special Education Coordinators must be able to meet the minimum daily physical requirements of:
- PMT certified
- Ability to partake in daily cleaning and maintenance activities which require bending, twisting, climbing ladders and extending.
- Ability to lift, carry and move quickly when assisting in PMT implementations in which to protect children and co-workers.
- Ability to bend and lift at least a minimum of 25lbs. on an individual and daily
Professional Growth and Development (ongoing staff development is embedded in program)
- Professional Development is tied into the teacher’s evaluations (currently SEED) and participation in PD activities are linked to identified needs
- Seek opportunities to attend conferences/professional development to expand knowledge relevant to our student population
- Complete bi-monthly self-evaluations to see progress and develop an on-going professional growth plan for yourself
- Models and ensures staff maintain high levels of professionalism and confidentiality
- Demonstrate sensitivity to and respect for the needs and feelings of all students while utilizing patience, empathy and enthusiasm
The minimum qualifications and requirements:
- Certification Requirements: Comprehensive Special Education (CT 165) or enrolled in a Special Education Program meeting requirement towards certification
- Completion of coursework and certification in Special Education
- Completed a minimum of 12 credits of coursework and working under a DSAP
- Demonstrates excellence with organizational and time management skills
- Demonstrates good leadership skills
- Demonstrates good problem-solving skills and flexibility
- Implement all PMT techniques as necessary per certification standards and in line with organizational policy.
Salary Range: $55,200 - $92,000 (Bachelors)
$65,550 - $100,050(Masters)
