Breastfeeding Peer Counselor
Starting pay range: $18.3028 - $20.0697 per hour
Location: Bloomington, IL
Schedule: Part-time, approx. 22.75 hours per week
About the Role
McLean County Health Department is seeking a compassionate and motivated Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to support new and breastfeeding mothers. This role is part of our Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program and focuses on providing guidance, encouragement, and resources to help mothers reach their breastfeeding goals.

What You’ll Do
- Provide support and encouragement to breastfeeding and new mothers in McLean County
- Answer questions about breastfeeding and pumping, and offer practical guidance
- Share resources, supplies, and referrals to other breastfeeding experts as needed
- Conduct home and hospital visits; provide after-hours support when needed
- Assist with Milk Depot operations, including accepting and shipping donated breast milk
- Maintain breastfeeding room and educational materials
- Participate in the State Breastfeeding Task Force and community events to promote breastfeeding
What We’re Looking For
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 1–3 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Personal breastfeeding experience within the last 5 years (required)
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain accurate records and handle sensitive information with confidentiality
- Comfortable working with diverse populations and engaging with the community
Work Environment
This position involves light physical work (lifting up to 20 lbs occasionally) and requires the ability to make sound decisions, maintain accurate records, and provide compassionate support. Work is performed in a safe and secure environment, with occasional travel for visits and community events.
