- Note: This position will be temporarily assigned to work in the Library Administrative Center while Main Library is under construction. Once Main Library re-opens, this position will report to the Adult Services Manager at Main Library, and fulfil the more typical Adult Services Librarian schedule, role and responsibilities.
Position Summary:
The Adult Services Librarian will work to support the educational, personal, and professional goals of adults through all phases of life, from early adulthood to post-career adulthood. With a focus on both peer-to-peer learning and intentional 1-on-1 interactions, adult programming supports the skills development of adults in a safe and comfortable environment. Librarians are expected to connect adults with needed resources, provide basic technology instruction and assistance, and build positive relationships with partners and community presenters to provide highly relevant programming. Librarians are expected to exceed minimum programming expectations for their department and act as leaders for outcomes-focused adult programs within their branch and systemwide.
In addition to programming, this position is responsible for providing frontline customer service to customers of all ages in the library branch. This includes technology assistance and assisting customers in accessing the full spectrum of library resources in multiple formats - print, digital, media, programs and classes. Other responsibilities include responding to reference, research/homework and readers' advisory requests; explaining and interpreting the library's services, policies and procedures; developing, managing and promoting the library's collection of materials.
This position will be temporarily assigned to work in the Library Administrative Center while Main Library is under construction, reporting to the Senior Program Manager for Adult Services. The temporary assignment will include strategic and administrative support for the Adult Services division and adult programming system-wide.
Essential Functions:
Meet customers' informational, research and pleasure reading needs by matching requests to appropriate resources.
Determine the timeliest, authoritative and appropriate information source for each customer, based on questions asked, the information required, and the format (print, non-print) that provides the most effective delivery.
Train customers in the use of electronic reference resources, internet searches, e-books and digital downloads; provide guidance and instruction for both general and specific requests. Enables customers to operate PCs, tablets, mobile devices to access digital materials.
Troubleshoot problems or instructs customers in the use of software and hardware. Assesses the level of instruction needed to use technology.
Manage and maintain library materials in specific, assigned areas of the collection by noting community needs and customer requests, consulting reviews and bibliographies, checking lost and missing reports and recommending purchases.
Perform relevant collection management tasks to ensure that resources are available to meet the informational and recreational needs of the community.
Provide quality programming for a targeted audience; creates promotional materials and merchandises collection with displays.
Develop varied and creative programs, publications and displays to enhance library services.
Continue professional development through workshops, classes, webinars, conferences, retreats, etc. request marketing assistance.
Choose activities to enhance or develop skills needed to meet professional or learning goals.
Perform administrative duties that may include serving as manager on duty, scheduling employees, submitting maintenance and IT tickets, dealing with customer concerns, reserving meeting rooms, interpreting and enforcing library policy.
Exercise sound judgment and uses available resources to determine the action needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum of two years of public library experience
Education:
Master’s degree in Library science from an ALA-accredited institution
Licenses and Certifications:
NC Public Library certification required or must be obtained within 12 months of hires
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with providing adult programs in a public library setting
Experience teaching digital literacy sessions or other relevant teaching experience for adults and older adults
Project-based leadership experience that demonstrates ability to think strategically, organize tasks, and meet project goals
