Summary
Under general supervision, evaluates and interprets medical treatment records, medical diagnostic coding and billing information; communicates with insurance companies, government programs and other pay sources; coordinates with collections agency on unpaid claims; performs related work as assigned
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Answers inquiries, provides information and resolves complaints from patients, crews, insurance companies, hospitals, government agencies and other pay sources (10%)
- Initiates billing correspondence to patients, insurance companies, government agencies and other pay sources regarding accurate and timely processing for medical bills; answer questions regarding charges and balances due (10%)
- Communicates with contracted collections agency regarding unpaid claims; provide patients with information regarding the collections process.(1%)
- Process subpoenas and records requests for patient records within a specified time period.(2%)
- Process medical billing claims through coding of diagnostic information, patient demographics and insurance information.(3%)
- Enters and retrieves billing date in specialized medical billing systems; review input for accuracy and compliance with medi-care, medic-aid and other billing requirements (65%)
- Creating and maintaining patient records (1%)
- Performing follow up and review on specified accounts daily (3%)
- Posting credits/debits to accounts and balancing total of deposit at the end of each day (5%)
Other Duties
- Creating storage files
- Cleaning of workspace as needed
- Disposal of HIPPA related material into proper shredding bin
- Unlocking files at beginning of day and locking files at end of day
- Refill office supplies as needed
- Inform billing office manager of supplies needed
- Change outgoing voicemail message as needed
- Create helpful binders/folders for manuals
Qualifications
Knowledge of:
- Medical terminology
- ICD-10-cm and current version of DSM diagnostic coding
- Insurance company, Medi-care and Medi-cal billing requirements, appeal processes, collections processes and managed care program arrangements
- Financial and medical record keeping principles and practices, applicable laws, ordinances and regulations, policies, procedures and terminology related to the department or function to which assigned
- Office administrative practices and procedures, including filing and standard operation of office equipment
- Business arithmetic, including decimals and percentages
- Correct oral and written business English usage, including spelling grammar and punctuation. business data processing principles.

- Performing medical/fiscal billing and auditing support work.
- Evaluating and interpreting complex medical and treatment records.
- Organizing and prioritizing work to meet critical deadlines.
- Interpreting and applying rules and explaining policies and procedures.
- Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
- Organizing, researching and maintaining medical/fiscal records and files.
- Operating standard office equipment including use of personal or on-line computers, and word processing and medical billing software.
- Typing/keyboarding accurately at a rate of 30 wpm.
- Understanding and carrying out oral and written directions.
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Physical Demands lifting up to 25 pounds, sitting for long time periods, standing for long time periods, continuous computer use for long time periods
Decision Making ability to make clear, precise sensible decisions pertaining to any situation
Financial Responsibilities posting payments, correct postage metering for outgoing mail, processing refunds for check writing by C.F.O and/or VP-Finance
Communication must possess strong verbal and written communication skills
Equipment Used computer, copier, facsimile, printers, postage meter, specialized billing systems, telephone.
