What are the responsibilities and job description for the Trial Magistrate position at Medina County Domestic Relations Court?

A Trial Magistrate will hear cases assigned to that Magistrate including but not limited to divorce hearings, dissolution hearings, temporary orders hearings, domestic violence, parentage, child custody and child support matters.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Conduct hearings and trials as assigned by the Judge
  • Draft, and submit recommendations to Judge
  • Review motions and recommend rulings, as assigned.
  • Prepare cases for trial.
  • Conduct pretrials and case management conferences
  • Develop case management schedules and orders
  • Refer appropriate disputes to mediation.
  • Participate in staff training and development as requested
  • Research and advise on legal, procedural, and administrative matters as assigned
  • Participate in community education activities as assigned
  • Participate in court initiatives as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Good standing with the Ohio Supreme Court
  • At least four years of experience in the general practice of law.
  • Experience in domestic relations law preferred
  • Knowledge of court system and procedure
  • Familiarity with the CSEA and Title IV-D preferred
  • Knowledge of common office practices, procedures, and equipment
  • Proficiency in operating a computer and using, or being able to learn, Microsoft Office products such as Word, Outlook, and Excel, and Westlaw
  • Ability to prioritize work, work independently without daily direct supervision. Must have good time-management skills, be highly organized and detail-oriented.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with Judge, Court employees, lawyers, outside agencies, businesses, and the general public
  • Ability to maintain sensitive and confidential information
  • Ability to effectively and professionally communicate verbally and in writing in English
  • Must be conscious of and sensitive to the diversity within the Court’s jurisdiction and be able to interact professionally with diverse population of people from many different geographic, socioeconomic, religious, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor appropriate for the position and expected of a representative of the Court.
  • Demonstrated dependability, reliability, and excellent attendance record
  • Patience, objectivity, maturity, effectiveness under stress, initiative, adaptability, and sound judgment. The qualifications and requirements listed above are guidelines for selection purposes.
  • Alternative qualifications may be substituted if considered by the Court to be sufficient to demonstrate the ability to perform the essential duties of the position.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: From $85,000.00 per year
