Overview

The Mercer County Emergency Services Department has openings for a demanding and rewarding career that involves meeting the public safety needs of answering 9-1-1 and dispatching Fire and EMS Resources via two-way radio systems. We provide a comprehensive training program and one-on-one training. No prior dispatching experience necessary.

Location:

Dempster Fire Training Center, 350 Lawrence Station Road, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648

Summary:

Communications and dispatching duties that include receiving and responding to 9-1-1 emergency calls for service and dispatching appropriate fire and EMS units. Operate and monitor radio channels, operate computer aided dispatch software and operate 9-1-1 phone software.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Valid NJ driver license
  • Be a resident of Mercer County (or become a resident within 1 year)
  • Ability to multi-task and type into a computer keyboard while speaking on a telephone or radio and to work rapidly and accurately under pressure of time, distractions and stress
  • Must be willing and able to work all shifts including nights, weekends, holidays and occasional mandatory overtime
  • Required to successfully complete training and obtain certification by the NJ Office of Emergency Telecommunications Services (OETS) for NJ Basic Public Safety Telecommunicator and NJ Emergency Medical Dispatcher, as a condition of continued employment. (Classes will be provided)

Starting Salary: $32,938*

*Appointees who successfully complete the required 12-month training period will be eligible for advancement to the title of Public Safety Telecommunicator 1 compensable at $40,892
