What are the responsibilities and job description for the Collection Systems Technician Trainee I position at Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District?
Overview
Under immediate supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks and operates a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles used in the maintenance, repair and construction of sewers and structures.
PLEASE NOTE: This position DOES NOT INCLUDE remote work.
Essential Functions: Performs a variety of tasks of increasing complexity and responsibility in areas including, but not limited to:
- Locate and mark MSD assets, as needed.
- Place and remove shoring from excavations.
- Transport materials, tools, and equipment to job sites
- Repair, rebuild and/or replace sewer pipes, inlets, manholes, and catch basins.
- Mix mortar and concrete, and hod bricks to assist bricklayer.
- Repair/replace fences, landscaping, trees, shrubbery, and sod, etc.
- Enter structures as necessary to remove debris, investigate assets, repair deficiencies, and install equipment.
- Clean sewer pipes, inlets, other MSD assets, and creeks
- Investigate customer complaints and take corrective action.
- Interface with computerized maintenance management and mapping systems; enter data and provide updates and referrals for all computer-generated work orders and services request (Maximo)
- Operate a variety of common and specialty vehicles and equipment and a variety of specialty and hand tools.
- Perform manual back-filling and proper compaction and assist in restoring concrete or asphalt pavements damaged by excavations.
- May work outside of your assigned discipline.
- Must be available to work overtime as needed.
Meet the requirements of the training program as set forth by the Collection Systems Apprenticeship agreement.
Successful completion of the program will necessitate performing training duties in accordance with set District journeyman standards. In addition to performing the above duties, the trainee will become familiar with identifying problem severity, perform CDL pre-trip inspection, operate and maintain trucks and other equipment; pull trailers.
Additional Responsibilities: : May operate various motor vehicles, pumps, demolition saws and other power-driven equipment; may perform related work as required or as delegated by supervisors; perform CDL pre-trip inspection, operate and maintain trucks and other equipment; pull trailers.

Training and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent and the ability to attain a passing grade on a written test of related skills/aptitude to enter a three-year MSD Collection Systems Apprenticeship Training Program.
Desirable Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Ability to perform heavy manual labor; ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather; working knowledge of safe work practices; working knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and regulations involved in vehicle operations; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to use various hand tools and equipment; Ability to operate a limited variety of other mechanical equipment; ability to prepare simple records and reports; ability to read, comprehend and pass all assessments given.
Must be capable of lifting and carrying 50 lbs. repetitively and independently.
Must be capable of entering, ascending and descending in a 24-inch manhole.
Must have a Class A Commercial Driver's Permit at time of hire; with tanker and air brake endorsements issued by the state in which the employee resides.
Must obtain, within first 8 months of employment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with combination, tanker, and air brake endorsements issued by the state in which the employee resides. Class A Commercial Driver's License with tanker and air brakes endorsements and MSD Medical Card for CDL operators must be maintained at all times following initial receipt of license.
Pursuant to MSD's "Substance Abuse Policy and Procedures," this position has been designated as safety sensitive. Candidates who do not possess a Class A Commercial Permit at time of job offer must pass a Non-D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. When the Commercial Driver's License is obtained, they will be required to pass a Federal (D.O.T.) Drug Test. Candidates who do possess a Commercial Driver's License at the time of job offer, must pass a D.O.T. Drug Test for this position. Employees occupying this position with a Commercial Driver's License are subject to Federal (D.O.T.) Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations.
Employees of MSD must have a “Meets Expectations” on their current performance review.
Salary : $44,700 - $56,600
