What are the responsibilities and job description for the Communications Associate position at Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition?

Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition (MEJC) is seeking a full-time position to support in the organization’s communications work. This Associate will drive the narrative around climate justice in the state through work that includes coordinating branding of campaigns, email and text outreach campaigns, organizing press events, managing social media content and calendars, communicating with donors, creating and producing video content, and managing regular maintenance of MEJC websites.

Description

Scope of Work
The Communications Associate scope of work includes the following:

Content Creation:

  • Develop social media graphics, images, text and other collateral for deployment in support of MEJC and partner campaigns and priorities
  • Draft press releases, op-eds, media advisories and other earned media collateral
  • Develop social media toolkits and messaging guides, including talking points, for distribution to coalitional partners
  • Promote and develop upon existing narrative toolkits and branding strategy
  • Maintain regular monthly newsletter
  • Develop and maintain regular social media calendar
  • Produce videos that help drive narrative strategy
  • Edit and develop content for website, including blog posts, regular maintenance and other duties

Contract management and external relationships

  • Work with external vendors on special projects
  • Develop relationships with communications professionals and journalists around Michigan
  • Build up storytellers and community spokespersons on major issues
  • Support communications capacity for coalition members, including conducting trainings and other mutual aid

Event Planning and Support

  • Contribute to organizing and planning of MEJC major events
  • Attend, document and promote events across major channels

Rapid Response

  • Support Policy and Organizing teams on rapidly emergent issues to ensure MEJC perspective is visible on all available channels and platforms
  • Ensure community perspectives are represented during major events (weather, political, etc)


Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate has the following qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of work experience in communications, including at least 1 year of advocacy and/or campaign experience
  • Experience directly implementing a communications campaign
  • Arabic or Spanish desired, but not required


The ideal candidate can demonstrate the following:

  • Experience and commitment to working on racial and social justice issues
  • Experience working in and with racially, ethnically and socioeconomically marginalized communities
  • Experience working with policy coalitions and/or community-based partners
  • Familiarity with the environmental justice, climate justice and Michigan landscape
  • Ability to effectively and respectfully communicate, collaborate and connect with people with various backgrounds, identities and experiences
  • Strong writing and research skills
  • Experience with major social media platforms, email blast platforms, video editing software, graphic creation tools and website administration platforms
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage relationships with colleagues as well as external partners and stakeholders
  • Ability to adapt communication of organization’s vision in response to current events and a changing political climate
  • Ability to consider multiple perspectives, think critically, provide an analysis of communication strategies and related risks
  • Ability to problem solve and implement solutions to complex communication issues
  • Persuasive and effective communication
  • Commitment to raising one’s cultural consciousness and challenging oppressive practices on an interpersonal and institutional level
