Job Summary:

The Radiation Oncology Nurse Lead is responsible for overseeing the delivery of nursing care to patient undergoing radiation therapy. This includes providing advanced clinical support, supervising the nursing team, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and fostering a collaborative and supportive environment for staff and patients. The role also includes patient education, symptom management, and program development to optimize outcomes and enhance the patient experience.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Leadership:

· Provide expert nursing care to patients receiving radiation therapy, including assessments, symptom management, and treatment support.

· Act as a clinical resource for the nursing team and collaborate with radiation oncologists, therapists, and other team members to deliver holistic care.

· Address complex clinical cases, making evidence-based decisions to optimize patient outcomes.

Team Management:

· Supervise, mentor, and evaluate the radiation oncology nursing staff, promoting professional growth and accountability.

· Develop staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for patient care and clinic operations.

· Lead regular team meeting to discuss updates, challenges, and quality improvement initiatives.

Patient Care and Education:

· Assess and manage patient symptoms and side effects related to radiation therapy, including skin reactions, fatigue, and pain.

· Educate patients and families about radiation treatment plans, expected outcomes, and side effect management.

· Act as a liaison between patients, families, and the care team, addressing concerns and ensuring continuity of care.

Quality and Safety Compliance:

· Monitor and enforce compliance with regulatory guidelines, accreditation standards, and clinic policies and procedures.

· Ensure adherence to radiation safety protocols and hazardous material handling procedures.

· Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of patient are and team activities in compliance with legal and ethical standards.

Program Development and Improvement:

· Develop and implement nursing protocols and workflows to enhance efficiency and patient care quality in radiation oncology.

· Analyze patient outcomes and department metrics to identify areas for improvement and implement changes as needed.

· Stay updated on advancements in radiation oncology and integrate evidence-based practices into care delivery.

Education and Professional Development:

· Provide training and education to radiation oncology nursing staff, ensuring proficiency in clinical skills and safety protocols.

· Lead the orientation and onboarding process for new hires in the radiation oncology department.

· Encourage and support staff participation in continuing education and oncology certifications.

Qualifications:

Education:

· Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.

Licenses/Certifications:

· Current RN license in the state of practice

Experience:

· Minimum 5 years of nursing experience, with at least 2 years in radiation oncology.

· Previous leadership or supervisory experience in clinical setting preferred.

Skills:

· Strong leadership, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

· Advanced knowledge of radiation oncology treatments and side effect management.

· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with patients, families, and the care team.

· Proficiency in electronic medical records wand familiarity with radiation therapy workflows.

Work Environment:

· Outpatient radiation oncology clinic.

· May involve exposure to radiation, hazardous medications, and emotional situations.

· Will need to be able to travel to all clinics.
