The Michigan Supreme Court is currently seeking qualified applicants for a Court Security Specialist. Reporting to the Security & Emergency Management Director, this position coordinates, researches, develops, analyzes, and communicates best practice recommendations for all court security matters. Essential duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide armed security and basic first-aid response for the Michigan Supreme Court (MSC) and all who work in or visit the HOJ. Maintain 24-hour “on-call” duty status in order to respond to immediate safety needs of members of the Court.
  • Initiate and maintain up-to-date research, security standards, and facilities security components on all court security matters to provide continuous improvement. Write detailed security manuals, policy and procedures, prepare information for web-based productions and draft grant Provide trial court security management assistance by phone, e-mail, and on-site for local policy issues (i.e. Local Administrative Orders).
  • Develop and provide court security training for the Court, trial courts, state judicial associations, and county and state law enforcement. Provide new employee orientation regarding HOJ security policies and emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate, conduct, and record firearm training for the Hall of Justice (HOJ) and Court Of Appeals (COA) security personnel.
  • Research and develop judicial threat assessment techniques and protocols by establishing operational procedures such as dealing with suspicious mail and packages, bomb threats, hostage situations, facility failures, guarding and patrolling physical property, and orienting and monitoring personnel involved with courtroom security.
  • Perform security analysis and initiate recommendations for enhanced security for trial court special events and MSC off-site judicial meetings and appearances and coordinate security during these events.
  • Coordinate initial investigation of security threats to justices, monitor all Court dockets and identify and act appropriately on potential threats to court employees. Compile, review, analyze, and manage trial court security incidents reported to the Supreme Court Security Division. Maintain the security incident reporting process for the HOJ.
  • Liaison with federal, state, and local law enforcement officials involved in trial court security issues.
  • Serve as the acting MSC security and emergency management director and state judiciary emergency management coordinator in that person’s absence.
  • Provide Executive Protection to any of the seven Justices as needed while in State on Official Judicial Business.
  • Conduct Law Enforcement Information Network (LEIN) background checks and Dept. of Technology, Management, and Budget (DTMB) access control requests, for MSC employees and contractors.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Associate’s degree or equivalent with courses in criminal justice, or a related field. Five to seven years of law enforcement or security related experience with emergency management experience. KNOWLEDGE: Proficient in training people, basic computer skills, strong interpersonal skills, excellent writing skills, and basic first-aid training.

ABILITY: Interact with and deescalate difficult individuals, operate screening and x-ray equipment.

LICENSING / PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATION: Concealed weapons permit and the ability to successfully complete a weapons proficiency program with annual certification based on Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Required to lift and transport materials, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.

WORK LOCATION: Official work-site location is the Hall of Justice. Remote work may be available in accordance with the MSC/SCAO Remote Work Policy.
