What are the responsibilities and job description for the Memory Care and Adult Services Program Assistant position at Mid-Island Y JCC?
Summary: Community Center seeks motivated, energetic person to provide compassionate support to individuals living with dementia and assist in the delivery of therapeutic programs. This position also provides staffing support in other adult service programs based on staffing needs, providing a flexible and responsive presence to ensure program continuity and quality of care. Strong social skills and previous Alzheimer's/dementia and/or Parkinson's experience preferred.
Reports to: Adult Center Director
Essential Responsibilities:
· Foster a warm, welcoming environment for participants in Memory Care and other Adult Center programs
· Assist with the implementation of structured daily activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia.
· Encourage and facilitate participation in programs to enhance quality of life, cognition, and social engagement.
· Provide supervision and emotional support to participants, responding calmly and appropriately to behavioral expressions.
· Maintain a safe and supportive environment at all times.
· Document participation and report changes in condition or behavior to appropriate staff.
· Take attendance and/or provide staffing support in a variety of social programs for older adults.
· Serve as bus assistant as needed, by escorting participants on the bus to and from program
· Provide physical assistance in moving furniture and/or program clients to ensure participants are situated properly to fully engage in program activities
· Provide supervision of program participants and intervene to reduce fall risk, prevent wandering, and/or address care needs
· Assist with serving snacks and lunch to program participants
· Provide redirection and reassurance to program participants with dementia who may be experiencing confusion or agitation
· Provide bathroom reminders and standby supervision with toileting, as needed.
· Serve as a backup for absent staff, adapting quickly to changing assignments.
Qualifications:
· High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor’s degree in social work, human services, gerontology, or related field preferred.
· 1–2 years of experience working with older adults or individuals with dementia preferred.
· Ability to work compassionately and respectfully with diverse populations.
· Strong observational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to manage multiple tasks and shift between roles seamlessly.
· CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
Part time hours (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9:45 AM – 2:45 PM possibility of additional hours based upon program needs and employee availability).
Job Type: Part-time
Pay: $18.00 per hour
