Position Title: Special Education Paraprofessional

SUMMARY: The Paraprofessional is employed to assist a special education teacher(s) in teacher-supervised instructional and non-instructional tasks. The person occupying the position reports directly to his/her assigned teacher. This is a non-tenured position and is subject to annual review. The Paraprofessional is responsible for the efficient performance of assigned activities, including those described below.
TERMS OF EMPLOYEMENT: Hourly 9 month position
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in the school and community as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. - Performs instructional and non-instructional activities as assigned and supervised by the teacher/supervisor.
- Supervises pupils in the school and community as assigned.
- Utilizes positive behavior support strategies to effectively manage student behavior.
- Demonstrates the ability to work as part of a team.
- Displays competence and good judgment in dealing with any physical and/or medical emergency which might arise.
- Demonstrates ability to utilize technology.
- Collaborates with the IEP team to assist in developing an educational program that will be directed toward the development of academic, communication, and social/emotional skills.
- Adheres to Federal, State, IU, District, and other applicable procedures, policies, and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS REQUIRED: Minimum requirement is a high school diploma. This person should have good communication skills, and be able to establish and maintain positive working relationships with staff. The paraprofessional should be flexible in adapting to student needs and various teaching styles.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT REQUIREMENTS:
- Achieve annual certification in Safe Crisis Management.
- CPR/First Aid Certification
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Bending, stooping, the strength and ability to lift approximately 50 pounds and to assist in lifting and positioning students. Ability to provide Safe Crisis Management (de-escalation and physical management of students).
TIME AND SITE REQUIREMENTS:
- Attendance at work is a requirement of this position; any and all absences must be approved by the immediate supervisor.
- Must be willing to participate in staff development.
PERSONAL CARE: Must be willing to feed, toilet, and assist with the personal hygiene of students when necessary.

It may not be used for personal profit or gain and will be relinquished to the Mifflinburg Area School District upon termination of employment from the district.
