CUSTODIAN, CLASS I
Reports to: Head Custodian and Facilities Manager Dept: Custodial Terms: By contract
JOB SUMMARY
Ensures a safe, clean, and efficient campus for students, staff, and the public. Performs various duties to maintain a clean and professional appearance of the schools, outbuildings, and grounds.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Licenses/Certifications:
● High School diploma or equivalent preferred
● Valid Minnesota driver’s license with no moving violations in the past twelve (12) months
● Insurability by the district’s insurance carrier
Work Experience:
● Experience in cleaning services or a related field preferred
Special Knowledge/Essential Skills:
● Ability to perform basic mathematical skills (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, and basic algebra)
● Fluent in understanding, speaking, reading,and writing English
● Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively to others
● Ability to organize, prioritize, and accomplish a variety of assigned tasks

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Building and Safety Procedures
● Identifies and recognizes safe building conditions and school safety procedures.
● Monitors building conditions, and security and safety by performing tasks such as building inspection, checking fire extinguishers, eye wash stations; locking/unlocking doors, checking windows, lighting, entries, appliances, and environmental systems to ensure hazards are not created. Promptly reports damage and security problems.
● Correctly uses, posts notices, and disposes of chemicals and hazardous waste.
● Follows procedures for use of chemical cleaners and power equipment to prevent damage to property, self, and others.
● Complies with all local, state and federal safety regulations.
Building Cleanliness and Appearance
● Services, cleans, sanitizes, and supplies public restrooms, classrooms, work stations, offices, cafeterias, kitchens, break rooms, multi-purpose rooms, stairs, sinks, drinking fountains, lockers, showers, windows, swimming pools, mechanical shops, cabinets, woodwork, shades/blinds, ceilings, blackboards/whiteboards, carpets, garbage cans, wastebaskets, hallways, school grounds, entry ways, and other areas as directed.
● Gathers and empties trash throughout the school, out-buildings, and grounds.
● Strips, seals, finishes, and polishes floors as well as cleans floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing and vacuuming as assigned.
Building Equipment, Maintenance, and Repairs
● Notifies supervisors concerning the need for repairs or additions to building operation systems.
● Restocks and requisitions disposable items. Provides accurate inventory. Properly stores tools and equipment.
● Sets up and tears down seating and equipment used during special events such as public conferences, sporting events, plays, concerts, and other school, public, and private meetings.
● Performs seasonal cleaning and maintenance tasks to include equipment maintenance, remodeling activities, snow removal, lawn mowing, weeding, painting, field preparation, and other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions and Expectations
● Possess fundamental technological skills to operate a computer, fax machine, copier, calculator, telephone, walkie talkies, digital readouts, etc.
● Attends safety in-services, training, and school meetings as requested.
● Works in all types of weather conditions.
● Reports to work each day on time, clean, neat, and in uniform.
● Works weekends and holidays as needed.
● Assists visiting public and staff in utilizing the facilities in a courteous manner.
● Other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
● Work with interruptions.
● Capable of frequent to constant standing and walking on floors, which may be concrete, terrazzo, vinyl tile, ceramic tile, wood and carpet (distances of approximately 5-10 miles/shift depending on tasks and location).
● Capable of lifting 60 pounds from floor to chest level and up to 40 pounds from waist to overhead.
● Capable of repetitively lifting up to 50 pounds from floor to waist level on an occasional to frequent
● Capable of carrying 50 pounds at waist level up 50 steps.
● Capable of carrying 60 pounds at waist level for a distance of 150 feet.
● Capable of climbing 8 steps of a ladder.
● Capable of operating a buffer/scrubber for up to 1 hour at a time.
● Capable of using wet/dry mops up to 15 minutes at a time.
● Capable of circular motion tasks (i.e. washing, dusting, painting, etc.) with the hands up to
5 minutes at a time.
● Capable of operating a snow thrower and shoveling snow up to 1 hour at a time.
● Capable of operating a vacuum machine up to 1.5 hours at a time on a repetitive basis throughout each shift.
● Capable of squatting up to 2 minutes at a time.
● Capable of bending over up to 3 minutes at a time.
● Capable of a push/pull strength of 90 pounds on an occasional basis.
● Capable of pushing/pulling (i.e. bleacher sections) 72 pounds of force with hands placed
32 inches above the floor.
● Capable of using hand tools requiring a grip force up to 15 pounds.
● Capable of using cleaning/disinfecting chemicals on a daily basis with recognized inhalation and absorption hazards.
● Capable of working in extreme temperatures, humid and dusty environments.
● Capable of using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to complete job tasks.
● Capable of pool and locker room cleaning duties to include pulling, storing and using up to
300 feet of water hoses.
● Capable of completing special duties assigned during the school year, during the summer and other non-school days.
