What are the responsibilities and job description for the Reading Specialist (full-time OR part-time) position at Milestones Day School (Special Ed School)?
Milestones Day School has provided state-of-the-art, evidence-based, comprehensive, educational and therapeutic programming for students with autism and mental health challenges for the past 29 years. We are seeking an experienced reading specialist to join our team working with students age 7-22 to help improve the quality of their lives by teaching skill development. The ideal candidate for this role will have strong team-building and organizational skills. Our dedicated Team of 90 staff serves students who have dual diagnoses many with high functioning autism/mental health challenges and dyslexia and/or other language-based learning disabilities. We are expanding our Reading Team and have an opening for a full or part-time Reading Specialist to increase literacy skills for individual students with various reading disabilities.
The Reading Specialists carries a caseload of approximately 10 students providing individual or small group instruction (1-2 students) using Wilson or Orton-Gillingham methodologies. Milestones also employs other methods as well (such as Linda Mood Bell). The Reading Specialists may also consult to classrooms to assist their students with literacy in class. Reading Specialists receive multiple prep blocks per week.
Specific Responsibilities Include:
•Model positivity
•Providing a positive and healthy environment in which students can therapeutically feel safe to take risks and grow
•Administer standardized assessments and write evaluation reports.
•Documentation of student progress by using both formal and informal testing measures such as the QRI, GORT, TOWL, GSRT, and DRA.
•Create a learning plan for each student on your caseload. This includes writing IEP goals, benchmarks, and reporting on them quarterly.
•Individual and/or small group (2 students) instruction. Evaluating and taking data on how the lesson went and making any necessary modifications.
•Consultation to the classrooms to assist students with learning-related needs.
•Observing students on your caseload to determine if they are generalizing acquired skills.
•Creating lesson plans using either OG or Wilson methodologies.
•Helping to contribute to the yearly book fair.
•Guiding students to pick appropriate literary books for their level of instruction.
•Annual attendance at IEP meetings for your students.
Requirements:
•Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s preferred
•Certification in either Wilson or Orton-Gillingham
•ESL/TESOL a plus! If the candidate has this certification, the role may include a few hours of 1:1 ESL instruction to one of our students.
