Radio Systems Specialist

JOB SUMMARY: Under direction of the Radio Services Director, to perform specialized technical work in the installation, repair, and maintenance of FM land mobile, mobile data, and microwave communication systems and equipment as well as plan, design, and implement such systems. This position will assist in the administration of the OASIS Public Safety Radio System, develop templates/code plugs, programs, and PM subscriber radios. This position requires a high degree of technical knowledge of a diverse array of communication systems and equipment. Experience with all systems is not required, but the individual will be expected to learn new systems and solve problems as needed and with little direction or assistance.

JOB DUTIES:
- Assist in administrating the Milwaukee County Subsystem of the OASIS public safety radio system. Monitor operation of system using GenWatch, working closely with Motorola FSO; diagnose, repair, and replace radio infrastructure equipment; adjust system and network configurations.
- Assist in the maintenance of back-up generators and UPS systems; coordinate snow removal and landscaping service contracts; maintain radio site security; facilitate site access to external contractors and vendors.
- Act as a liaison to other County Departments and partners for communication system services requests, complaints, or problems; assist with subscriber break-fix issues; provide communication system consultation services to County Departments.
- Provide technical support and training to other radio technicians; set repair and maintenance priorities; provide 24-hour on call support for mission critical systems on a rotating basis; provide on scene communication support for critical public safety incidents.
- Maintain accurate asset inventories including portable radios, mobile radios, base stations, spare infrastructure equipment, shop tools, and shop supplies.
- Develop, modify, and deploy code plugs for Motorola, EF Johnson, and other approved manufacturers; troubleshoot and repair malfunctioning subscriber radios; perform preventative maintenance and tuning of subscriber radios.
- Install and configure mobile radio installations in squad cars and other County vehicles; install, configure, and maintain base stations and BDAs in County buildings
- Maintain accurate records using databases and spreadsheets; develop operational and technical policies and procedures, assist in the maintenance of and application for FCC licenses.
- Maintain 911 phone systems to include Vesta, ANI/ALI, 911 Trunks, Programming, Console Layouts, Vests Recording, Troubleshooting, and Advanced Repair.
- NICE Radio Recording Maintenance, Troubleshooting, and Repair. Maintain networking of Console positions.
- To perform other duties as assigned.
- Current Wisconsin resident at time of application
- Current Wisconsin Driver's License maintained throughout employment
- High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent is required
- At least six (6) months of experience with installation, repairing, and/or maintaining FM land mobile radio systems
- Proficient at intermediate level utilizing a personal computer
- Must be able work any assigned shift including weekends and holidays as required. Position is subject to mandated scheduled and unscheduled overtime
- Must be able to pass a criminal background, including fingerprinting, and an employment verification check
- Ability to push/pull/lift/carry up to 50lbs on a regular basis
Preferred Qualifications:
- Have a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) certification or must obtain within six (6) months of hire
- Have a Communications Unit Leader (COM-L) and Communications Technician (COM-T) certifications or must obtain within two (2) years of hire
