Established in 1883, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) oversees a renowned urban park system spanning 6,809 acres of parkland and water. Featured among its 180 park properties are 55 miles of parkways, 102 miles of Grand Rounds biking and walking paths, 22 lakes, 12 formal gardens, 7 golf courses and 49 recreation centers. SUMMARY: 

To perform skilled cement finishing and masonry work including flat concrete finishing, block-laying, brick-laying, stone setting, tuck-pointing, tile setting, stucco and plaster for maintenance and new construction projects.
  • Demolition tasks including jack hammering, chipping, dry or wet saw cutting with a handheld saw or walk-behind, and grinding.  Hauling material away, cleaning up site, and properly disposing of or salvaging material.
  • Placing concrete for sidewalks, floors, or other flat work and finishing cement work according to job requirements.
  • Measuring, laying out and performing skilled masonry work including, block laying, brick laying, stone setting, tuck-pointing, and tile setting.
  • Mixing cement, concrete, mortar, plaster, and tile glue (spec mix, bag mix, and hand mix) as necessary.
  • Maintaining work area and equipment in proper working order and cleaning tools and equipment used by the MPRB Cement Shop.
  • Promptly communicate with the Foreman regarding any significant cement or masonry issues.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and make recommendations for solving cement/masonry issues or in addressing the failure of a Park Board asset in relation to cement or masonry.
  • Assist MPRB in identifying and addressing the park and recreation needs of underserved and under-represented communities.
Need to Have:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • 7 years documented experience in the Masonry Trades
OR
  • Documented completion of Masonry Trades apprenticeship program and 4 years' Masonry Trades experience post apprenticeship program.
  • Valid driver's license
Nice to Have:
  • Journeyman Cement Finisher or Bricklayer preferred
  • Forklift certification preferred
Physical Requirements

Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, driving, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
 
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.  With assistance, exerting up to 150 pounds of force occasionally.
 
The ability to safely operate a motor vehicle as incumbents are subject to local travel to and from work locations.  The ability to remain in crouching, kneeling, or standing position for extended periods of time.
 
Work is performed in a job site environment, both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather.  Exposure to hazardous materials, fuels, chemicals, acids, epoxies, bonding agents, dust, flying debris, noise, and grinding in relation to cement work. May work in confined spaces.
 
Frequent standing, bending, stooping and working on rough, uneven ground, as well as wet and slippery surfaces.  Ascend and descend ladders to access work areas and work at heights requiring approved fall protection equipment.
 
This position may be required to respond after hours, on holidays, and weekends to emergency situations regarding masonry or cement issues.

Skills Crucial to Success in This Role: 

  • Demolition, installation, repair and maintenance of concrete, stucco,  plaster, tile, grout, brick, stone, and mortar.
  • Place concrete, tile, brick, stone, and block units in accordance with project requirements including level, plumb and true unless otherwise dictated.
  • Finish concrete to a polished finish or textured finish as required by the job with or without a motorized finishing machine.
  • Understand the safety hazards of the work and employ proper safety precautions and/or use of PPE.
  • Effectively communicate information to supervisors, co-workers and the general public in a clear and concise manner.
  • Establish and maintain effective, respectful, and productive working relationships with a diverse workforce.
  • Outstanding customer service principles and practices and standards for a diverse customer base.

Selection Process:

What steps the selection process involves:

  • We review your minimum qualifications.
  • We rate your training and experience based on application materials and supplemental questions (30%).
  • We conduct a structured panel interview (oral exam) (70%).
  • We calculate your civil service score based on the above components and place you on the eligible list if all testing components are passed (passing score for each component and as an overall score is 70.00 or above).  Eligible list will expire in three (3) months.
  • We refer the top finalists to the hiring manager for an interview.
  • References, including verification of employment and work performance, may be considered. 
  • We conduct a background check.  Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, the applicant will be asked to sign an informed consent allowing the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board to obtain their criminal history in connection with the positions sought.   • Upon receiving a conditional offer of employment, applicants will also need to successfully pass a pre-employment physical examination paid for by the MPRB.
