General Definition of Work
Performs intermediate protective service work in a variety of general patrol duty assignments, responding to emergency or after hour requests, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Patrol Sergeant, Captain, Chief Deputy Sheriff and County Sheriff.

Essential Functions
- Patrols the county; provides first response services at incidents; enforces laws; investigates criminal activity; ensures the safety of the public; maintains records, reports and files; testifies in court.
- Operates a patrol vehicle; observes violations of traffic laws, suspicious activities or persons and disturbances of law and order; responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints.
- Enforces traffic laws; issues citations for traffic violations; assists motorists in distress.
- Makes arrests, forcibly if necessary; transports suspects to the jail.
- Provides first response medical treatment at injury scenes.
- Investigates crime and accident scenes; gathers evidence; takes victim and witness statements.
- Provides testimony in court.
- Prepares and maintains a variety of police records and reports.
- Ensures vehicle and equipment are in proper working order.
- Assists in and attends ongoing training in procedures, tactics, weapons, computer systems, and related subjects.
- Perform appropriate duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
General knowledge of law enforcement methods, practices and procedures; general knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the county; general knowledge of the rules and regulations of the department; general skill using firearms, chemical agents, weapons of defense and a motor vehicle; general skill using standard office equipment and related hardware and software; ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare clear and comprehensive reports; ability to deal courteously, firmly and tactfully with the public under stressful situations; ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective and reasonable courses of action with due regard to surrounding hazards and circumstances; possession of physical agility and endurance; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the public.
Education and Experience
Associates/Technical degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, sitting, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires walking, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to extreme heat (non-weather), exposure to vibration, wearing a self contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Special Requirements
- CPR/First Aid certification.
- Minnesota peace officer standards and training (POST) license.
- Department and agency training will be provided and must be completed on an ongoing basis.
- Valid driver's license in the State of Minnesota.
Other Requirements
The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
Minimum Qualifications
- Pursuing Law Enforcement Degree
- Post License eligible upon hire.

Salary range is $33.77 to $42.09 per hour.
