Job Summary:
The Dietitian is responsible for the clinical nutritional care, education, and dietary needs of all patients. Keeps abreast and shares the latest nutrition health information with staff, especially the Food Services Director, in accordance with Joint Commission and Title 22 standards. This position will be working primarily with adults and geriatrics.
Major Responsibilities
• The Registered Dietitian (RD) is responsible for assessing those identified patients’ nutritional status within defined time frames. This includes overseeing that the proper priority level is given to patients that are completed by the DTR. The RD calculates the nutritional need of high-risk patients (i.e., diabetic, enteral/parental, etc.) and ensures that these needs are being met. The RD is able to assess and guide the nutritional needs of all ages, including children, pregnant and lactating mothers, adults, and the elderly.
• In addition to initial assessment, the RD re-assesses patients in a timely manner, according to their nutrition risk level. Follows up on recommendations made on the patient to the physician.
• The RD is accountable for counseling patients and their families, where applicable in food and drug interaction and nutrition education of therapeutic diets. Adapts food choices to prescribed diet to meet cultural and religious needs of patients. Documents the patient's barriers to learning, previous knowledge of diet, a method of teaching and patient's understanding on the Multidisciplinary Education Form.
• As an active member of the multidisciplinary patient care team, the Registered Dietitian participates in weekly patient rounds. Documents patient nutritional care plan on the care plan form. As part of this process, the Registered Dietitian communicates nutritional concerns of patients and assures that any related concerns are handled in an expedient manner.
• The RD is active in departmental Performance Improvement Activities. S/he submits PI statistics within a timely manner. Additionally, the RD assists the FSD in demonstrating continual improvements or stable processes.
• The dietitian may assist with other related tasks as requested. For example, the RD ensures kitchen and unit galleys meet JCAHO and DHS standards. This involves inspecting cold and dry storage facilities. Completes inspection form and reviews findings with FSD and FSS. May be needed to pick up food for a patient at a local store. • May need to assist patients with menu selections
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum six months experience in a clinical setting
- Active registration status as a Registered Dietitian in the American Dietetic Association.
- Fire Card – to be obtained within 90 days of hire
Preferred
- Two years as an RD is highly desired.
