This Position is for a Area Coordinator Perkinston Campus with a public university located in Perkinston, MS.

Job Description: The Area Coordinator is a mid-level, full-time, 12-month, live-in position with the Department of Residence and Student Life. Area Coordinators are responsible for developing and administering a comprehensive residence life program focused on community development and resident contact in residence halls. Area Coordinators manage daily operations for various residence halls, supervise residence hall advisors, resident assistants, and residence hall receptionists. Area Coordinators serve as the catalyst for student contact and development in the community and are designated as frontline staff members for staff supervision and development, student discipline, program development, on call crisis protocol, and facility management. Area Coordinators are responsible for the selection, training, evaluation, and development of residence hall advisors, resident assistants and residence hall receptionists. Area Coordinators are expected to have direct contact with residents and staff through routine daily interactions.

Job Duties

  • Participate in the selection of Residence Hall Advisors (RHAs) and Resident Assistants (RAs).
  • Supervise RHAs and RAs in the performance of their duties.
  • Supervise receptionists assigned to your assigned residence hall area (day-to-day supervision and scheduling), maintain accurate time cards for employees under your supervision.
  • Conduct regular staff meetings to provide relevant information, build trust and unity, and improve communication within the staff; conduct bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with RHAs and RAs.
  • Assist in staff training as needed.
  • Provide ongoing feedback to RHAs and RAs regarding their job performance.
  • Conduct formal evaluations as scheduled by the Office of Residence Life.
  • Outline and review specific expectations of RHAs and RAs.
  • Ensure that administrative and managerial work delegated to RHAs, RAs, and/or receptionists is completed in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate multiple hall openings and closings, managing multiple hall check-in and checkout procedures.
  • Maintain complete and accurate information of residents through Room Condition Reports (RCRs), floor plans, and key records.
  • Maintain accurate key inventory.
  • Work through the Office of Residence Life to process room changes and hall transfers.
  • Establish and supervise an effective desk operation of multiple halls.
  • Report problems with vending machines and washers/dryers, and other third-party equipment.
  • Know and understand college policies, procedures, and forms and interpret these to students as needed.
  • Implement and enforce a fair and consistent application of college and residence hall regulations as they relate to standards of behavior; document and report student violations of college policy.
  • Administer student conduct in accordance with the college discipline process. Keep a confidential file of all incident reports and report any violations to the appropriate office (either campus police or the Director of Residence and Student Life).
  • Investigate and respond to concerns and complaints of students, parents, campus staff members, campus police, and others in a manner that provides accurate information and fosters good public relations.
  • Mediate student conflicts.
  • Become familiar with the resources available to students and make referrals when appropriate.
  • Work with staff and students to establish and offer standards of conduct appropriate to community living and supportive of the academic mission.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the halls and their residents by assessing building security, assisting with fire safety testing, providing leadership in emergency situations, educating residents on safety procedures, and reporting risks to Residence Life and Bu iness Services.
  • Report needed maintenance, repairs, or cleanliness issues in assigned residence halls and surrounding areas in a prompt manner.
  • Work with Housekeeping to ensure that high levels of cleanliness are maintained, and report unsatisfactory services to the Office of Residence Life.
  • Formulate strategies to reduce damage from vandalism and, when necessary, assess charges to students who are responsible for the damage.
  • Maintain and monitor both the operational and club account budgets in accordance with state regulations and college purchasing guidelines, ensuring compliance with procurement card policies and procedures as an authorized cardholder.
  • Implement hall programs according to student needs and interests, and encourage residents' participation in hall programs.
  • Assist with the supervision and implementation of campus-wide student activities, including RHA, SGA, or CAB-sponsored events, athletic events, etc.
  • Assist with summer camp coordination.
  • Maintain appropriate relationships with students and staff members.
  • Transmit through both example and statement an impartial attitude toward all persons regardless of race, culture, religion, or sexual orientation.
  • Recognize and respond to the special needs of persons with differences in culture, lifestyle, experiences, or physical abilities.
  • Attend all Office of Residence Life meetings.
  • Represent the department at various scheduled workshops, training sessions, and conferences in accordance with the EDP plan.
  • Contribute to the professional growth of yourself and colleagues by sharing ideas, participating on committees, and experimenting with new concepts and ideas from the field.
  • Project a professional reputation through appearance and conduct (written and verbal communication and behavior). Demonstrate dependability and accountability by being punctual in meeting attendance as well as in adhering to deadlines.
  • Maintain a work schedule consisting of eight (8) office hours per day. Between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., office hours will be posted, and the Office of Residence Life made aware to ensure availability to students.
  • Conduct daytime and evening meetings, and support special hall/campus events, which may include weekends and holidays. The nature of the position requires that the Area Coordinator be available to the residents and staff and spend the majority of time in the assigned area of responsibility. Be available to the residents and staff 24/7.
  • Participate in occasional weekend duty as assigned by the Campus Vice-President.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence and Student Life, the Dean of Student Services and Enrollment Management, or other appropriate personnel.
