Definition

Missoula County is accepting applications to potentially fill two Female Juvenile Probationary Detention Officer positions. INTERVIEWS WILL BE CONDUCTED WEEKLYTO APPLY:

Performs a variety of work involved with the supervision and care of juvenile inmates and related activities as assigned. This is an entry level probationary position used for training and evaluation of probationary officer for the Juvenile Unit of the Missoula County Detention Center and at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy.

Representative Examples of Work

Participates in a prescribed detention officer training program to learn required, policies, procedures and practices for dealing with the needs, demands and requirements of incarcerated juveniles. Supervises and attends to the needs of juvenile inmates, including providing food, supplies and physical security, in accordance with established policies and procedures. Searches inmates and inspects cells to control contraband and verify cleanliness and sanitation according to policies and procedures. Patrols the juvenile detention center for evidence of forbidden activities as outlined in the inmate rule manual and policy manual. Provides or obtains routine and emergency medical care and aid for inmates. Distributes medications and commodities from the commissary to inmates. Records booking information including booking questions and medical and mental health questionnaires. Escorts inmates to and from court, medical appointments and other juvenile detention facilities for transfers according to the Missoula County Sheriff’s departmental policies and procedures. Enters and retrieves information from the Criminal Justice Teletype system. Tabulates miscellaneous data in report form. Writes incident reports on inmate activity, violations of facility rules, and criminal activity in the detention center.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet minimum requirements as set forth by Montana State statutes and administrative rules:
(a) relevant experience working with youth (Missoula County accepts a post-secondary degree or one year of experience working with youth);
(b) be at least 18 years of age;
(c) have successfully passed background checks by both law enforcement and the Child Protective Services Division of the Department of Public Health and Human Services;
(d) be physically, mentally, and emotionally competent to care for youth; and
(e) understand the purpose of the youth detention facility and be willing to carry out its policies and programs.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must attend and satisfactorily complete Detention Officer Basic Course at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy within one (1) year of employment. Must be certified in the use of First Aid and CPR. Employment is subject to a thorough background investigation. Upon offer of employment, must pass physical examination. Requires a valid Montana Driver’s License and safe driving record and satisfactory completion of weaponless defensive tactics course.

Physical/Environmental Demands

The employee may be exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Requires adjusting to changing shifts and exposure to a stressful environment. May require employee to be in on-call status. Must be able to physically respond in the event of an emergency to provide for the safety and welfare of co-workers and the inmate population. Requires some physical exertion such as long periods of standing and frequent walking on concrete surfaces and may require occasional pulling or dragging of weight of up to 150 lbs.
