MOSERS is seeking an individual for our Benefit Counselor opening. This position reports to the Assistant Benefit Officer and is based in our office in Jefferson City. Our Benefit Counselors play an integral role on our team by providing excellent customer service to our members. You’ll work in a team-oriented environment, counseling members over the phone and in-person regarding their MOSERS pension, life insurance, and long term disability insurance benefits, in addition to evaluating complex benefit scenarios.
What You’ll Do
The individual in this position will provide technical support to the Benefits Administration section. Responsibilities include:
- Counseling members regarding complex retirement options in person and over the phone
- Communicating with members to address membership, payroll, years of service, retirement eligibility and other questions related to benefits administered by MOSERS
- Performing initial verification for each month’s new retiree and/or survivor benefits to ensure accuracy and compliance with state law and MOSERS’ administrative regulations
- Applying complex statutory and contractual provisions and procedures to determine eligibility, benefit amounts, and options to which a member is entitled for retirement and applicable insurance programs
- Resolving service and/or payroll problems, reconciling differences and determines corrections and adjustments if necessary
- Reviewing terminology and feasibility of existing and proposed legislation, group insurance policies, rules and regulations, and provide suggestions/improvements to the manager and supervisor
- Conducting on-site benefit education and informational meetings with individual and department representatives on an as needed basis
- Reviewing applicable mass correspondence, handbook updates, brochure updates, etc., and providing feedback or suggestions for improvement or correction of material so as to ensure clear communication with members
- Communicating with fellow employees to interpret provisions of retirement law and corresponding regulations
What We’re Looking for in an Ideal Candidate
- Bachelor’s degree and 3 years professional or technical experience in benefits administration, customer relations, insurance, personnel administration, or closely related area.
- Significant experience working for a public pension system or other relevant experience may be substituted for the degree requirement
- Excellent communication and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to interpret and apply complex statutory, contractual, and administrative rules
- Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook
- Reliability and dedication to the task at hand and strive to exceed expectations
- Has a team mentality and willingness to collaborate
