Summary

The Ophthalmic Technician will assist the Optometrist and play a crucial role in helping us to provide excellent patient care. They will perform various diagnostic tests and procedures, as well as being involved in managing patient flow and ensuring that our practice runs smoothly and efficiently.

We are looking for an energetic and friendly individual with excellent interpersonal skills. While previous patient care experience is strongly desired, previous ophthalmic technician experience is not required.

The ideal candidate has a passion for knowledge and for providing amazing patient care. While primarily focused on ophthalmic technician duties, the role includes cross-training to help with reception, office administration, and optical duties.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Create a welcoming atmosphere for patients and visitors
  • Coordinate patient care with the Optometrist and other members of the eye care team
  • Perform pre-examination diagnostics (autorefractor, automatic lensmeter, Optos) and other diagnostic tests (OCT, visual field, etc.)
  • Conduct examination entrance testing and chief complaint/history (visual acuity, confrontation fields, ocular motility, cover test, color vision, stereo vision, pupil testing)
  • Consult with patients, and any other eye care team members as appropriate, to address patient questions and concerns with plans of care and prescriptions
  • Maintain accurate and detailed patient records
  • Manage patient flow and ensure efficient use of exam rooms
  • Clean and maintain ophthalmic equipment
  • Interface with other healthcare professionals regarding referrals, co-management, etc.
  • Provide verification of contact lens orders
  • Maintain inventory of contact lenses, medical supplies, and other items as directed
  • Perform contact lens insertion and removal training for soft, RGP, Ortho-K, and scleral contact lenses
  • Communicate order status with patients and other eye care team members as appropriate
  • Other tasks as assigned
  • Secondary Duties

Maintain and verifying patient health and insurance information through the electronic medical record system

  • Assist patients with the selection of frame and lens products
  • Dispense eyewear and contact lenses
  • Adjust and repair eyewear
  • Place track, and follow-up on eyewear orders
  • Communicate order status with patients and other eye care team members as appropriate
  • Take receipt of eyewear, contact lens, and other deliveries as appropriate
  • Perform physical inspection of eyewear orders
  • Maintain inventory of frames and laboratory supplies
  • Collect revenue, record and update financial information, record and collect patient charges, and collect and expedite third-party claims
  • Answer phone calls and scheduling patient appointments as needed
  • Maintain an organized and clean reception desk, waiting area, and workspace

Education & Experience

Required

  • Authorization to work in U.S.
  • High school or equivalent

Preferred

  • 1 year of ophthalmic technician or medical care/assisting or 3 years of customer service experience
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, especially ophthalmic
  • Familiarity with electronic medical records, electronic ordering platforms, office software, and phone systems
  • Familiarity with contact lens hygiene and insertion and removal training

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills are needed when performing the duties of this job
  • Ability to frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities are required for this position, including close vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $23.00 - $32.00 per hour

Expected hours: 34 – 42.5 per week
