JOB TITLE:

Sheriff Sergeant

FLSA STATUS:

Pay :$40.34-$46.72

JOB SUMMARY:

Supervises staff and coordinates law enforcement activities to protect life and property, prevent the commission of crimes and preserve peace by functioning as a certified Colorado peace officer in the department.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

Carries out supervisory/managerial responsibility in accordance with policies, procedures and applicable laws, including: interviewing, hiring and training staff; planning, assigning and directing work; establishing deadlines; observing activities of staff or efficiency and appearance; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; coordinating, developing and approving staff training; reporting infractions to the supervisor; and addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Reviews all reports and documents for content, accuracy and proper crime classification.

Assumes command of squad; inspects uniforms and equipment; conducts daily squad briefing.

Informs supervisor of major crimes or disturbances; takes required actions.

Performs internal affairs investigations; coordinates and supervises investigations involving possible policy violations and citizen complaints.

Purchases uniforms and equipment.

Maintains law and order and protects lives and property, including: patrolling County; making security checks; responding to calls; investigating nature of complaints; investigating illegal or suspicious activities; serving subpoenas and court orders; serving as mediator between parties; detecting and apprehending law violators; conducting searches or persons and property; issuing citations, warnings, etc.; generating reports and completing forms; locating defendants and serving warrants; and transporting or escorting prisoners.

Coordinates search and rescue operations; oversees white water rescue operations.

Identifies grant sources and writes grants.

Conducts and prepares investigations of vehicle accidents; renders aid to injured persons; requests other assistance; directs traffic; investigates serious injury and fatality crashes; draws diagrams; determines cause and writes citations and reports reflecting same.

Conducts investigations of crimes against people and property and illegal drug activity, including: responding to citizens' complaints of illegal activity; opening cases; gathering information; identifying, collecting, preserving and transporting evidence and property; recruiting and training informants; developing investigation plans; coordinating drug buys; conducting background checks; taking photographs and generating sketches; obtaining and serving arrest and search warrants; tracing and recovering stolen property; assisting other divisions and agencies; conducting interviews; arresting offenders; conducting video and audio surveillance; and completing various reports and forms.

Prepares for and testifies in judicial proceedings.

Serves as public information officer; prepares statements; provides information to new media regarding department operations.

Interprets, develops, communicates, updates and monitors policies and procedures; recommends improvement when

necessary; and writes/revises same.

Assists other officers or agencies by responding to calls and serving as backup; serves as member of the tactical entry (SWAT) team.

Performs maintenance and minor repairs on assigned vehicle and equipment; inspects and tests equipment to assure safety.

OTHER DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

Serves as a training and participates in training programs by attending classes, participating in drills, simulations etc., studying County geography and participating in physical training and conditioning programs.

Coordinates hiring processes by convening boards to review applicants.

Coordinates field training program, wild land fire fighting training and white water rescue training.

Responds to animal control and code enforcement violations.

Serves as a liaison and/or member of various committees, boards, and/or teams and collaborates, persuades, presents reports to and negotiates with others outside own work area to coordinate efforts and maintain cooperative and efficient relations.

Reports administrative and/or operational problems to supervisor.

Assumes the responsibilities of the supervisor during his/her absence.

Performs firefighting duties, as needed; serves as fire manager.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

Education and Experience:

One year certificate from college or technical school; and,

Three to four years of progressively responsible related experience; or,

Any combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Must be able to work variable hours.

Licenses and Certifications:

Colorado Peace Officers Standards and Training Peace Officer Certification

Valid Colorado Driver's License

Firearms Certification

Radar Certification

First Aid and CPR Certification

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Administration of staff and activities, through direct supervision.

Internal departmental policies and procedures.

Applicable state, federal and local ordinances, laws, statutes, rules and regulations.

County street system and physical layout of the County.

First aid and emergency medical care.

Mechanics of arrest/restraint tactics.

Traffic investigation techniques.

Fire fighting techniques.

White water rescue techniques.

Money laundering techniques.

Court system and procedures.

Record keeping, report preparation, filing methods and records management techniques.

Operating and maintaining all assigned equipment required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Providing testimony in court.

Conducting interview and interrogations.

Using specialized equipment including firearms.

Writing reports.

Administering first aid/CPR.

Communicating orally with internal staff, citizens, and other departmental staff in order to give and receive information in a courteous manner.

Mental and Physical Abilities:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and so forth.

Ability to deal with problems and stressful situations involving several variables in changing situations.

Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

Ability to pass physical fitness/efficiency examinations.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; ascend and descend stairs, ladders, ramps, scaffolding, etc.; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; and push, pull and/or lift over 50 pounds frequently and over 100 pounds occasionally.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in an office, emergency vehicle and in the field exposing the employee to various outside atmospheric conditions and possible bodily injury from moving mechanical parts of equipment, tools, or machinery, electrical shock, radiation, explosions, and/or toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to persons who have contagious diseases/illnesses, volatile situations and imminent danger when performing the essential functions of the job.

The incumbent's working conditions are typically very loud.

Working time may require irregular hours, shift times, and/or on‑call status.
