Job Summary
Under general direction, responsible for performing diagnostic ultrasound examinations in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Responsibilities
Conducts Ultrasound Procedures
Performs ultrasonic diagnostic procedures of specified body areas by properly positioning patients and locating/scanning areas for interpretation as directed by the physician or radiologist. Explains procedures to patients and/or family members ensuring cooperation and optimum test results and to reduce anxiety. Documents all diagnostic findings on appropriate worksheet for each examination as per protocol or policy. Completes all required documentation such as the invasive procedure checklist, etc. Follows all protocols for all procedures. Assists physicians with such procedures as needle biopsies, renal biopsies, etc. by scanning patient, marking patient's body and determining angle of puncture as requested. Assists with patient scheduling and ensures Add-on and emergency patients receive adequate service. Is responsible for equal share of weekend and holiday duty, as well as shift assignments, call coverage, and a proportionate share of overtime, should this be necessary.
Supplies and Equipment
Maintains ultrasound equipment in working order. Calls service personnel when required. Uses acceptable safety precautions when handling equipment. Maintains cleanliness of equipment and work area. Reports equipment malfunctions to supervisor in a timely manner. Properly cleans, sterilizes and secures probes to prevent damage; follows sterilizing technique guidelines and documents appropriately. Maintains timeliness of reporting equipment malfunctions when Supervisor is not available. "Knows" equipment and is able to detect small problems before they become major. Performs visual safety inspection and reports dangerous conditions to appropriate personnel. Prepares room for study according to established policies and procedures. Maintains special order interventional supply stock levels, as assigned. Always leaves equipment in a safe and working condition. Always uses acceptable safety precautions.
Radiology Information System (PACs and RIS) Operation
Tracks patient exam appropriately using the RIS. Documents all required info in CIS as per protocol. Archives all quality images within all studies in PACs. Verifies all images are successfully transferred prior to end of shift. Verifies transmission of images to PACs prior to deleting local archive. Follows digital imaging policies to ensure proper utilization of PACS. Verifies that all imaging data is correct regarding accession number, stat level and procedure type. Sends only quality images to PACs, as observed by Supervisor. Monitors online worklist to ensure all studies ordered are completed during shift.
Patient Care Positioning and Education
Always acts as a patient advocate and is customer focused (i.e. always notifying patient/families of delays or progress in lengthy studies), as per positive patient feedback/observed by Supervisor. Changes patient properly (including removal of metal objects). Always uses two patient identifiers. Uses accurate scanning techniques as per Radiologist feedback. Explains the exam and answers patient questions accurately. Explains precautions and/or hazards to person(s) assisting and/or accompanying patient during procedure. Minimizes in/out time. Utilizes safety features of the equipment as appropriate (i.e. safety straps). Always uses sharp safety devices, when appropriate.
Performs Other Duties as Required
Attends mandatory in-services, staff meetings, and actively participates in self-education. Attends a minimum of 6 staff meetings per year. Completes all required competency assessments on time. Maintains required job knowledge (e.g. licensure and credentials, continuing education etc.). Performs other duties as required.
Education
Satisfactory completion of a formal Ultrasound training program or equivalent training as specified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS).
Credentials
Satisfactory completion of a formal Ultrasound training program or equivalent training as specified by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS). Must be certified and registered as RDMS (OB or AB), RT(S), RT (VS), RVT, or RVS. New graduate Sonographers must complete their registry boards and obtain certification within twenty-four months of eligibility. BLS certification either upon hire or within orientation period.
