    TITLE: Elementary Math and Science Specialist

    REPORTS TO: Elementary Math & Science Instructional Leader and Building Principals

    DESCRIPTION: Monroe Public Schools is seeking a passionate and knowledgeable Math and Science Specialist to enhance our educational programs and support our teachers in delivering exceptional math and science instruction to elementary students. The specialist will be instrumental in ensuring students develop not only a love of learning but also strong foundational skills. The specialist will primarily promote innovative teaching strategies through coaching.

    This is a district based position on teacher-salary and will require travel between the three elementary schools within the district.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Curriculum Development

    • Support the development, implementation, modification, and evaluation of a robust K–5 math and science curriculum aligned with state standards and the NCTM’s effective teaching practices; and that it is reflexive of the principles of equity and cultural responsiveness to meet the needs of diverse learners
    • Collaborate with teachers and district leaders to ensure vertical and horizontal alignment and continuity across schools.
    • Design grade-level resources such as exemplar tasks, thin slicing activities, anchor sets of student work, and real-world application projects.
    • Incorporate research-based instructional models including the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (Smith et al.) and Building Thinking Classrooms (Liljedahl) and inquiry based learning and instruction
    • Demonstrate curriculum leadership through modeling of instructional excellence and promoting best practices in lesson design, classroom management, and assessment.

    Teacher Support & Professional Development


    • Provide job-embedded coaching, modeling, and feedback to enhance math and science instruction, grounded in current research and standards for mathematical practice.
    • Facilitate customized professional learning opportunities across multiple formats (workshops, coaching cycles, data teams) with follow-up support for sustained impact.

    • Support the development and implementation of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) in mathematics, including progress monitoring tools like Aimsweb .

    • Lead collaborative planning and reflection through learning walks and structured data team protocols.

    • Promote a growth mindset among educators and students, ensuring equity; all students have access to on-grade level rigorous math and science instruction

    Student Achievement & Assessment


    • Collect, analyze, disaggregate and interpret student data (including SBA, NGSS, and benchmark tools like Aimsweb ) to identify trends and instructional needs.
    • Use data to inform targeted interventions, adjust curriculum pacing, and shape professional development priorities.
    • Champion the use of data to close achievement gaps and increase equitable access to high-quality instruction for all learners.

    Family & Community Engagement


    • Develop and facilitate family engagement programs to promote understanding of math and science standards, instructional strategies, and student progress.
    • Serve as a liaison between schools and community organizations to provide students with real-world STEM learning experiences.
    • Meet with district Instructional leader on regular basis and present information from all campuses
    • Communicate effectively with families, teachers, staff, and administrators to foster a collaborative learning community
    • Demonstrate a passion for education and a commitment to lifelong learning, modeling professional growth and continuous improvement.

    Additional Duties

    Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Elementary Math & Science Instructional Leader, elementary building Principals and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

    Equipment

    Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

    Travel Requirements

    Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as necessary.

    PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

    • A valid Connecticut Elementary Teacher’s Certificate and minimum of five (5) years elementary teaching experience that includes instruction in math and science
    • Master’s Degree from an accredited university and/or leadership experience
    • Knowledge of and experience in the application of adult learning theory
    • Possess exceptional interpersonal, communication and collaboration skills with families, students, teachers, staff and administrators
    • Experience utilizing and deep knowledge of Illustrative Math and/or Mystery Science as curricular resources
    • Strong belief and pedagogy around how students learn math and science
    • Demonstrate ability to prioritize multiple assignments and complete tasks with minimal direction
