What are the responsibilities and job description for the Financial Aid Specialist I position at Montana State University Northern?
The major purpose of this position is to provide guidance to prospective financial aid applicant in order to help them understand aid differences and requirements and also determine the best type(s) of aid available to them. Must be able to interpret university, state and federal rules and regulations. Also provides guidance to prospective and current students on basic financial literacy concepts. Some data input and other tasks as assigned.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Provides guidance to prospective and current students in order to help them understand aid differences and requirements.
2. Provides guidance to prospective and current students on basic financial literacy concepts. Provide Entrance and Exit Counseling to loan borrowers. Prepare exit packets to all withdrawing students. (Official and Unofficial withdrawals).
3. Become familiar with the National Student Loan Database System (NSLDS) to advise students about their current loan debt.
4. Serves as Client/Outside Agency Liaison meeting and counseling with prospective students.
5. Assist with New Student Orientation Financial Aid presentation each semester. Providing incoming freshman with the important and appropriate information. Assist in presenting at each Registration Day during the summer for new students providing them with missing requirement and award letter information.
6. Provide Campus Visits to students, parents, and school groups.
7. Provide one on one technical support and assistance with FAFSA applications.
8. Provide guidance and information to prospective students on Financial Aid procedures.
9. Assists with the yearly Scholarships Awards Celebration.
10. Prepare Financial Aid publications for prospective students.
11. Maintain and manage Financial Aid Live Support Chat.
12. Order supplies for the office as needed.
13. Process outside scholarship checks.
14. Data input.
15. Provide back up procedures and processes for Specialist II as needed.
16. Answer phone and backup the front desk.

- Associate Degree in Business, Education, or related field; OR significant work experience in customer relations, in business, in finance or banking, or in higher education offices.
- Demonstrated experience working with students in an education setting.
- Demonstrated financial literacy skills (budgeting, career earnings, loans).
- Demonstrated experience working in higher education.
- Computer experience including Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated experience in handling sensitive and confidential situations and information.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.

Title IX Coordinator
The Title IX Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the University’s compliance with federal and state discrimination and harassment laws, including Title IX.
