What are the responsibilities and job description for the Radio Shop Technician position at Montgomery County Sheriff's Office?
The Radio Shop Technician will perform installation, removal, and re-installation of radio equipment, in-car video equipment, in-car data equipment/peripheral equipment, and accessories, as well as provide first echelon service and repair of radio equipment, mobile in-car video equipment, and mobile in-car data equipment in all vehicles leased/owned and operated by Montgomery Sheriff's Office personnel and outside public safety agencies in Montgomery County. This position will spend 85% of the time in the shop and 15% in the field at tower sites, district offices, and other remote locations.

Shift Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm however, candidates must be able to work adjusted hours including nights, weekends, and holidays in the event of mission critical incidents.
Responsibilities
- Installs or removes equipment and accessories in vehicles using air, power, and hand tools
- Builds special components to accommodate the installation of necessary equipment in vehicles (car harnesses, brackets for radio/lighting equipment, and off-site jobs)
- Troubleshoots malfunctions of radio and other equipment in vehicles in order to diagnose and correct operational problems
- Coordinates scheduling of work orders with other shop techs in order to ensure prompt completion of required work
- Complete work tickets and documentation as required
- Maintains records, logs and/or service forms in order to document all installations and repairs
- Maintains inventory of hardware and shop equipment
- Regularly cleans assigned work area in order to eliminate hazards
- Operates vehicles around work sites and drives to perform work functions off-site
- Assists other department personnel with installing radar systems, sirens, and other electronic equipment/special police equipment
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Associates degree or completion of vocational or industry technical training courses in modern electronic technology preferred
- FCC license or C.E.T. certification preferred
- A minimum of two years paid experience in electronics work with all types of two-way radios required
- Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations as they pertain to Public Safety Radio services is preferred
- Must be a U.S. Citizen and resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a background investigation
- Must possess a current valid Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance with no more than 3 moving violations in the past 3 years
- No conviction above a Class B Misdemeanor or a Class B Misdemeanor within the last 10 years nor have been on or currently on court-ordered community supervision or probation for any criminal offense
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively
- Must be able to follow detailed oral and written instructions in the installation/removal/repair of electronic mobile communications equipment
- Possess understanding of basic vehicle electronics and wiring
- Must be able to read and comprehend technical shop manuals, troubleshooting guides, manufacturers' specifications, warranties, parts catalogs and work orders
- Ability to learn computer software applications to program and/or troubleshoot equipment installation
- Must be physically able to climb, balance, stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, twist, lift and squat for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift items up to 50 lbs. Standing for 50% of work day is expected.
- Ability to operate equipment and machinery requiring monitoring of multiple conditions and making multiple, complex and rapid adjustments
- May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions and moderate to loud noise level
- Willingness to cross train & accept additional duties as assigned

Additional Information: After receiving a conditional offer of employment applicant must pass the following before becoming an employee of Montgomery County:
- a drug screen (1/2 cost = $26, responsibility of applicant)
- a physical stress test (1/2 cost = $22.50, responsibility of applicant)
