POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Navajo Language Teacher—High School

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Valid Arizona State Secondary Teaching Certificate with appropriate content-area.
  2. Valid Arizona State Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
  3. Ability to speak, read, and write the Navajo language.
  4. At least two years of successful teaching experience.
  5. Structured English Immersion (SEI) or English as a Second Language (ESL) endorsement preferred.

JOB GOAL

 

To help students learn oral and written Navajo, as spelled out in the District’s high school Navajo language curriculum.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Meets and instructs assigned Navajo language classes in the locations and at times designated.
  1. Plans a program of Navajo language study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of high school students.
  1. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the high school students.
  1. Prepares for classes assigned, and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the principal.
  1. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior.
  1. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicates these objectives to students.
  1. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media, consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or student groups involved.
  1. Strives to implement instruction that is consistent with the District’s philosophy of education and instructional goals and objectives.
  1. Assesses the accomplishments of students on a regular basis and provides progress reports as required.
  1. Diagnoses the learning disabilities of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of district specialists as required.
  1. Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, material, and facilities.
  1. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, District policy, and in fair and just manner.
  1. Assists the administration in implementing all school policies and/or rules governing student life and conduct and develops reasonable classroom rules and procedures while maintaining classroom order in a fair and just manner.
  1. Makes provision by being available to students and parents for education related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  1. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence.
  1. Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  1. Performs such other tasks and assumes responsibilities as the supervisor assigns.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT

 

Nine and one-half (9.5) months a year. Exempt status employee. The Governing Board will establish salary and work year.

 

EVALUATION

 

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
