Fire Engineer/Paramedic II - INTERNAL APPLICANTS ONLY

THE POSITION
Fire Engineers are typically assigned to the suppression division and perform a wide variety of “all-risk” tasks, including both emergency and non-emergency functions.  In addition to the full range of duties of a firefighter, Fire Engineers drive and maintain fire apparatus, operate fire pumps, operate other automotive and apparatus equipment, perform minor vehicular repairs and preventive maintenance, and ensure that all assigned tools, firefighting and rescue equipment are present, in working order, and in their rightful place.  Fire Engineers are required to serve as the acting officer in the absence of a ranking officer and perform other work as required.

• Works a 48/96 shift, which are back-to-back 24-hour shifts, followed by 48 hours off.  

 

• Operates and is responsible for the operational readiness of fire apparatus: rescue vehicle, ladder truck and engine.  Some vehicles have manual transmissions.

 

• Performs daily apparatus checks including, but not limited to, emergency light operation, fuel level, air brakes, and oil level.

 

• Performs weekly/monthly apparatus checks including, but not limited to, engine inspection, axle inspection, checking fluid levels, checking for leaks, and checking tire pressure.

 

• On a monthly basis, may be involved with detailed vehicle maintenance program including opening valves to let water drain from the engine, and hooking up hoses from a hydrant to pump fresh water back into the engine.

 

• Performs daily medical equipment check, as required, to ensure that supplies are fully stocked.

 

• Performs weekly medical equipment check to ensure that batteries are charged, inventory is complete, and all equipment is in working order.
   
• Performs station maintenance including housekeeping duties such as waxing floors, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, wiping down wall surfaces, cleaning kitchens, cleaning rest rooms, preparing meals, yard work, etc.
   
• Works with the crew to perform various work duties including fire suppression, and fire prevention pre-planning of industrial building sites, target hazards, and large residential complexes.
   
• Responsible for checking routes and hydrant locations prior to responding when receiving emergency calls.  Must also know routes to local emergency departments and must be familiar with street locations as well as the layout of the land (hills, etc.); must be familiar with the water supply available in different areas.

 

• Under the direction of a ranking officer (Captain), will take orders to perform under their supervision; however, at time is expected to use personal judgment and respond appropriately to situations.  In the absence of a Captain, must be prepared to assume the role of a ranking officer in terms of managing personnel and equipment.

 

• In an emergency situation, and if the first Engineer on the scene, would monitor the pump panel, change hose lines, monitor pump pressure, and troubleshoot any problems that arise with the pump equipment.
   
• Paramedics are tested on County protocol for emergency care and must meet continuing education requirements every two years.  Paramedics are involved in CQI review to review the quality of responses and administered care to ensure that County protocols have been followed.

 

• Perform at least 60 minutes of exercise per day, with 30 minutes of recovery and hygiene.

 

• Partakes in and annual/medical physical and physical fitness evaluation to monitor health and fitness of employee.

 

• From time-to-time, function as the primary paramedic on a company for periods of up to four (4) hours per shift during routine daily staffing changes.

 

• Assist other paramedics at their request in the best interest of patient care.

In order to compete for this promotional opportunity employees must:
 

1. Be currently employed with the Moraga-Orinda Fire District as a full-time, paid Firefighter or Firefighter-Paramedic and have a total of two years full-time firefighting experience with the Moraga-Orinda Fire District by April 7, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

1. At the time of performance testing, candidates must possess a current, valid California Class-B Motor Vehicle Operators License or a current, valid Class-C Motor Vehicle Operators License with a “F” Firefighter endorsement.

 

1. Possess course completion certificates for Driver-Operator 1A and 1B and submit copies with application.

 

1. Have completed the District requirements for driving and operating fire apparatus.

 The selection process may consist of the following:
 

1. Written test (weighted 25%).  A written test will be administered to all applicants.   Questions on the written exam will be drawn from the Written Test Reading List, TAP 21-060. Hydraulic calculations on the written examination will be based on the CQ-squared method using the information sheet for pumping standards.
