Position Description
Mainstream Commercial Divers is seeking a qualified Malacologist to supplement our current project needs. The position involves overseeing mussel surveys, assessment preparation, technology support on a wide range of marine projects, and technical report composition.
Duties and Responsibilities include:
- Travel to various projects within the United States
- Prepare quotes for potential mussel survey efforts.
- Direct and manage mussel survey efforts with members of the dive team.
- Write technical reports based on data produced from mussel survey efforts.
- Draft biological assessments when needed.
- Correspond with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
- Maintain and apply for state surveying permits and qualifications.
- Ability to operate or wiliness to be trained on various types of remote sensing equipment such as sonar imaging, multibeam bathymetric, and ROV-based work.
- May be exposed to varying levels of physical activities and extremes such as long periods of standing, walking, crouching, and using hands.
- May work in extreme environments, such as heat, cold, rain, loud noises, long hours, etc.
Qualifications
- Either hold or with some on-the-job experience, be able to obtain a Federal Native Endangered and Threatened Species Recovery Permit, complete with approval to handle all currently listed mussel species for the lower and middle extents of the Ohio River and its major tributaries, including the Tennessee, Cumberland, and Green Rivers, as well as the middle Mississippi River and its tributaries.
- Currently hold, or able to obtain within 1 year, state scientific collection permits in Kentucky, Illinois, Tennessee, and West Virginia, as well as other surrounding states as needed.
- Familiarity with GIS preferred.
- Experience with technical writing.
- Communication skills, including both written and verbal.
- Willingness to branch beyond mussel work into technological offerings, including remote-operated vehicle operations and underwater scanning technologies.
- Ability to be onsite on projects for long durations, including weekends.
- Valid driver’s license required.
Education/Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in biology or a related field preferred (work experience applicable to this job description will be considered in lieu of a degree)
- Experience working on and around marine floating assets such as barges and boats
- Basic marine navigational knowledge
