What are the responsibilities and job description for the PreK Substitute Teacher position at Mounds Park Academy?

Mounds Park Academy is a PreK-12 independent school in Saint Paul, MN that serves approximately 575 students from throughout the Twin Cities area. Since 1982, Mounds Park Academy has engaged students in a rigorous college preparatory experience that is demanding, but not draining, and goes far beyond memorization. Students are challenged to apply their understanding to stir the human spirit, stand for justice, and shake the world. Mounds Park Academy seeks enthusiastic, positive, and high-quality Substitute Teachers for our PreK program. Substitute teachers are responsible for providing a classroom instructional program that supports the continuity of learning when the classroom teacher is away/absent. At MPA, substitute teachers are an important part of our community as they work to create consistently calm, welcoming, and engaging classrooms alongside our faculty and staff.

It is expected that a successful Substitute Teacher would:

  • Follow learning plans developed by the PreK teachers to create a cohesive and consistent learning experience for children
  • Manage the classroom effectively to encourage student participation and maintain a positive learning environment
  • Adapt teaching methods and classroom management to fit the abilities and areas of growth for each individual child
  • Supervise students in and out of the classroom, including in the hallways, on the playground, and in the cafeteria
  • Provide supportive learning engagements both in-class and regarding at-home assignments based on the provided lesson plans
  • For long-term substitutes: develop lesson plans and assignments consistent with the full-time teacher’s previous lesson plans, assess student progress, communicate with parents, and engage with the school community to the greatest extent possible
  • Fulfill all requirements and qualifications required by the State of Minnesota to be cleared to work in a PreK classroom, including stringent background checks and professional development hours.

In addition, the ideal candidate would possess the following skills and attributes:

  • Be available on an on-call or pre-scheduled basis
  • Be available Monday – Friday for classroom teaching assignments
  • Follow through with scheduled assignments
  • Be flexible if/when asked to complete duties beyond the original assignment
  • Model professional experience, attitude, and demeanor appropriate for a school setting
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of diversity and be open to working in a community that values diversity and representation in all of its forms.
