WATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

To efficiently operate all production facilities and to maintain safe adequate supply of water from water sources to meet customer demands.

Duties & Responsibilities

General

  • Know and follow the Authority’s Employee Guide for Conduct;
  • Know and follow the Authority’s Safety Code relative to the work performed in the Production Department, to work safely, to suggest the elimination of physical hazards that could lead to an accident of any type and to prevent the occurrence of accidents;
  • Immediately, or before end of normal workday, report accidents that involve personal injury, vehicle damage and/or property damage;
  • Know the rules and regulations of the Authority as approved by the Board of Directors pertaining to work in the Production Department;
  • Maintain a neat, clean and well-groomed appearance at all times as well as to maintain a courteous manner when speaking to customers and fellow employees so as to make a positive impression;
  • To have and retain a valid driver’s license so as to be able to operate an Authority truck or vehicle;
  • To maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in a neat, clean, orderly and safe operating condition;
  • To attend training courses required by the Authority;
  • To be available for emergency work on an overtime basis when required by work conditions;
  • Know the rules and regulations of the PADEP and USEPA as pertains to work in the area of responsibility within the Authority;
  • To properly prepare and complete various Authority records and reports forms such as, but not necessarily limited to, daily job sheets, mileage reports, vehicle maintenance forms and equipment maintenance forms.

Operational

  • To properly and efficiently regulate flow of water from various pumps and booster stations to meet customer demands;
  • To consult operator of immediately preceding shift to identify any changes in status of water supply sources;
  • Assist in unloading and storing treatment chemicals and supplies;
  • Properly perform assigned housekeeping duties;
  • To routinely inspect and change at the designated time of the day all recording charts;
  • To record water levels of all standpipes and the status of operation of all pump stations, production facilities and booster station pumps;
  • To record the amount of water pumped from each source of supply as well as repumped by each booster station;
  • To inspect and adjust chemical treatment pumps and related facilities to insure proper addition of various water treatment chemicals at all times;
  • To record amounts of chemical used as well as complete required chemical logs and report forms;
  • To collect and analyze water samples as required to determine chemical and physical characteristics as well as to determine the proper dose of various water treatment chemicals are being added;
  • To promptly respond to alarms from outlying stations to determine cause and take appropriate corrective action;
  • To inspect and secure all facilities as required to prevent vandalism and theft;
  • Operate and monitor filters. Backwash filters as scheduled or when needed. Maintain proper level, ROF and LOH;
  • Monitor and record treatment process monitors as required. Adjust treatment processes to maintain proper set points;
  • Removal of sludge via sludge removal drives.

Maintenance

  • To make minor repairs to chemical treatment facilities and pumping equipment;
  • To assist maintenance personnel when required.

The foregoing outline of responsibilities list only principal duties. Assignments to other types of responsibilities may be made when work conditions require within this area of responsibility except under emergency conditions.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Performed the duties of Water Treatment Operator for at least one (1) year or its equivalent or attended Water Operator I & II classes offered or its equivalent.
  • Must have passed the Water Operator Certification License: Class A, Subclass 1 and 8 at a minimum.
  • A certificate of graduation either from an accredited high school, vocational school, night school, correspondence school, or their equivalent, which has developed the candidate’s ability to read, write and perform simple arithmetic as well as the ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Must be able to work well with others & bring a professional attitude to the workplace.
  • Must have strong time management skills and work productively with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess a valid PA driver’s license

Skills and Abilities:

  • Candidate shall have a working knowledge of and know how to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers;
  • Shall have the ability to understand and follow simple oral and written instructions

Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical examination certifying to good health.
Be capable of working a regular eight (8) hour work day, as well as work overtime.

Periodic Supervision and Range of Guidelines/Procedures:

Follows periodic direct instructions and guidelines, policies and procedures that require some interpretation. Problems that cannot be addressed through an existing guideline, policy or procedure are referred to supervisor or more senior position. Position incumbent must exercise judgment about when to escalate issues.

Persons contacted in the performance of duties include a wide variety of M.A.W.C employees from support staff through department manager level for problem solving and explanatory purposes.
