Position Summary:
The Regional MDS Consultant is responsible for supporting facilities within an assigned region in the accurate and timely completion of Minimum Data Set (MDS) assessments and care planning. This position ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, provides training to facility staff, and offers expertise in clinical reimbursement strategies, particularly related to the Patient-Driven Payment Model (PDPM).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct audits and reviews of MDS assessments to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Provide on-site and remote support to MDS Coordinators and interdisciplinary teams at facilities across the region.
- Serve as a subject matter expert on MDS, PDPM, and case mix reimbursement methodologies.
- Identify educational needs and provide training and mentoring to facility staff on clinical documentation, RAI process, and MDS coding.
- Monitor facility performance related to MDS accuracy, reimbursement outcomes, and quality measures.
- Assist in implementing and maintaining systems that ensure proper care planning and documentation to optimize reimbursement and regulatory compliance.
- Participate in mock surveys and provide assistance with survey preparation related to clinical documentation and MDS.
- Collaborate with regional and corporate leadership on quality improvement initiatives and strategic planning.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in federal/state MDS regulations and ensure that facilities are informed and compliant.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited nursing program; RN license required. Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field preferred.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of MDS coordination experience in a skilled nursing facility; prior regional or multi-site MDS support preferred.
- Licensure: Current, unencumbered RN license in the applicable state(s).
- Certifications: RAC-CT (Resident Assessment Coordinator – Certified) preferred or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire.
- Strong knowledge of MDS 3.0, PDPM, CMS regulations, and RAI guidelines.
- Excellent analytical, teaching, and mentoring skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to travel frequently to facilities within assigned region.
- Proficiency in MDS software and EMR platforms (e.g., PointClickCare, MatrixCare).
- Regional travel up to 75% of the time.
- Remote administrative work when not on-site.
- Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings or weekends as needed.
