Job Description Summary

The Hearing Research Laboratory in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) invites applications for a Staff Scientist Position in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The candidate’s responsibilities include a broad oversight of research activities involved in three hearing research projects, together with several other external grants related to the translational studies of neurodegenerative and neurodevelopmental disorders. More specifically, these responsibilities include 1) the establishment/refinement of laboratory research procedures, 2) the generation and maintenance of a large hearing research database, and 3) presentations at national and international research conferences and preparation of research reports and manuscripts. This position will also be responsible for the creation of educational materials and training for undergraduate students, PhD/MD students, and residents in an NIH-supported training program, which focuses on interdisciplinary research training in the translational study of auditory function impairment and hearing loss.

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements: A PhD degree and several months to one year of relevant program managing experience.

Job Description

  • 30% - Work with the PIs in the development and implementation of standard translational research procedures for several hearing research projects, which apply multiple animal models of presbyacusis, noise- and ototoxic drug-induced hearing loss, and postmortem human temporal bones.
  • 30% - Generate and maintain the research database to monitor and report study activities. These databases include longitudinal auditory physiological measurements in mouse models of presbyacusis, noise- and ototoxic drug-induced hearing loss, the multi-omics database of cochlear cells in multiple pathological conditions, and a large postmortem human temporal bone collection at MUSC Hearing Research Program and Brain Bank at the Department of Pathology.
  • 20% - Conduct the training and education of undergraduate and graduate students, ENT residents, and team members.
  • 20% - Present research reports at national and international research conferences and prepare/submit research reports and manuscripts.

MUSC Minimum Training And Experience

A Ph.D., M.D. or equivalent with two years postdoctorate experience.

(Infrequent) Ability to lift and carry objects up to 30 lbs. a distance of five (5) floors and to outlying buildings. (Frequent) Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects close at hand. (Continuous) Ability to see and recognize objects at a distance. (Continuous) Ability to match or discriminate between colors. (Continuous) Ability to determine distance/relationship between objects; depth perception. (Continuous) Good peripheral vision capabilities. (Continuous) Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. (Continuous) Ability to perform gross motor functions with frequent fine motor movements. (Continuous) Ability to be qualified physically (by medical personnel) for respirator use, initially and annually. Ability to work alone in isolated areas, such as darkrooms. (Frequent) Additional New Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license. Computer literacy. Ability to work rotating shifts as required. Ability to work overtime as required. Ability to learn and use new processes, tools and equipment as required.
