Primary Function:
The job of Nutrition Specialist is done for the purpose/s of assisting the Director in the administration, promotion, and development of the school lunch, breakfast, summer feeding, and after-school snack programs in compliance with federal and state regulations and local policies.


REQUIREMENTS:


1. Educational Level:


Bachelors Degree in Dietetics and Nutrition/Management, School Nutrition, or Institutional Management; Dietetic Internship; 3 years experience in program. Must obtain Masters within three years of hire date.


2. Certification/License Required:


S-5 Certification as School Nutrition Director or necessary credentials to qualify for certification within 3 years


3. Experience:


Three years experience in the program or a like program


4. Physical Activities:


Routine physical activities that are required to fulfill job responsibilities


5. Responsibilities:


Responsibilities include: working under direct supervision using standardized procedures; directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units; utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to impact the organization’s services.


6. Working environment:


The daily work is performed in office and/or training room settings. The work may require moving, lifting and storing of materials and equipment. Frequent interruptions occur and visual and mental concentration on details and precision is required.


7. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:


KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: knowledge of the parameters of nutritional analysis; dynamics of special diets; and federal and state meal pattern requirements.


SKILLS are required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: computer skills; ability to work well with others and exhibits leadership qualities.


ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; often gather, collate, and/or classify data; Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined but different processes; Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of varied types and/or purposes; Problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data frequently requires independent interpretation of guidelines; Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; setting priorities; working as part of a team; working with interruptions; and working with detailed information/data.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Demonstrates prompt and regular attendance.


2.


Assists in a variety of nutrition and administrative programs and activities (e.g. planning and conducting employee staff development programs, school lunch programs, etc.) for the purpose of meeting federal and state nutrition regulations.


3.


Coordinates services with a variety of individuals, programs, and organizations (e.g. special

needs/special diet students, local and state health providers, school administrators and staff, special needs educators, parents, and School Nutrition staff, etc.) for the purpose of providing nutritious meals while following medical prescriptions.


4.


Develops and conducts nutrition education activities in variety of situations and locations for children and adults (e.g. selected schools, community events, etc.) for the purpose of teaching and sharing important information on the benefits of healthy meals.


5.


Evaluates the effectiveness of individual food service units through the administration of management evaluations (e.g. unserved food, variety of nutritional food available, etc.) for the purpose of providing the most effective program.


6.


Interacts with vendors coordinating taste test for the purpose of ensuring students receive desirable meals that also meet federal nutrition guidelines.


7.


Maintains the menu management component of the computer system (e.g. special needs menus, inventory to support menus, etc.) for the purpose of assuring the information is accurate and up to date.


8.


Manages School Nutrition Program aspects of several programs (e.g. Pre-Kindergarten Program, Head Start, etc.) for the purpose of meeting federal guidelines.


9.


Monitors nutrition-related costs, materials, and activities in schools (e.g. menus, production schedules, participation plate costs, etc.) for the purpose of meeting budgetary guidelines.


10.


Participates in a wide variety of nutrition related activities at many different levels (e.g. local, state, and national professional organizations, product testing, facility planning, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring and promoting nutritionally adequate meal service to all children.


11.


Plans districts breakfast, lunch, and snack menus around a variety of factors (e.g. budget constraints, input from a menu planning committee of school nutrition managers, etc.) for the purpose of meeting state and federal nutrition guidelines.


12.


Provides professional guidance, consultation, resources, and assistance to teachers, administrators, and School Nutrition Program employees (e.g. special dietary needs, regulations, Seamless Summer (Summer Feeding) Program, etc.) for the purpose of meeting and maintaining district, state, and federal nutrition guidelines.


13.


Serves as liaison between the instructional division and each School Nutrition site (e.g. keeping teachers informed of special needs diets, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the nutritional and dietary needs of students in the district are met.


14.


Works with the system, Edison menus and inventory for the purpose of calculating accurate nutrition analysis.


15.


Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient, effective functioning of the work unit.
